The Romans drank it, the Iberians slurped it, and the Visigoths couldn't get enough of it either. We can see why. This 100% organic Tempranillo from Valdepe¤as, the 'Valley of Rocks', does indeed rock. Classic notes of red cherry, leather, and spice quickly send you body and soul to Spain. 2007 Alvaro Palacios Spanish Red, "Les Terrasses" $32.97
"Dark red. Precise cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by cocoa, anise and dried flowers. Supple, chewy dark fruit flavors are gently supported by dusty tannins, with good acid lift on the back. Finishes with excellent juicy persistence and a jolt of bitter cherry." IWC90
2007 Alvaro Palacios Spanish Red, Camins Del Priorat/ Carignan Blend $19.99
Winemakers are like authors, or film directors, and the good ones leave their imprint on their creations. Alvaro Palacio is one of the younger generation of vintner's and he brings a youthful energy and excitement to this stellar Priorat blend. Lots of bright red fruit greet you at the nose, followed by a light mouth-feel that belies the power of this wine. Balanced tannins also meet layered acidity, in a wine that would work wonders with lamb, or braised short ribs. This is sort of the short story version of Alvaro's novel length L'Ermita, but at a price closer to a pulp paperback than an autographed first addition.
NV Alvear Pedro Ximenez, Solera 1830 Px (.500L) $149.99
"This was a huge, thick, raisiny-flavored sherry with a chocolate/caramel-like taste, exceptional unctuosity, and a huge, oily, thick finish. It is unquestionably a sherry to be sipped at the end of a meal. One bottle will easily serve 20+ people." WA95

2006 Artadi Spanish Red, Vinas De Gain/ Tempranillo (Net) $29.97
2006 Arzuaga Spanish Red, Crianza (Net) $19.99
"The 2006 Crianza is 90% Tempranillo and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot aged in French and American oak for 15 months. 2005 Arzuaga Spanish Red, Crianza (Net) $23.97
"Deeply colored, the wine reveals a complex aromatic display of cedar, saddle leather, violets, lavender, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a medium-bodied, supple-textured wine with ripe, spicy blue and black fruits and light tannin. The wine is well-balanced and has excellent concentration." WA90+
2008 Arzuaga Spanish Red, La Planta/ Tempranillo $10.99
Always a tasty introduction to Ribera del Duero, the '08 La Planta from Arzuaga shows its typical smoky cherry quality, with hints of mocha and vanilla from a brief four month stint in oak adding complexity to the fruit. This is well-made Ribera del Duero that's true to the flavor of Tempranillo in this famous D.O., and true to the big, rich, spicy style of wines made in the region.
2004 Astrales Spanish Red, Tempranillo (Net) $39.97
"Alluring and exotic. Kirsch and raspberry ganache aromas leap from the glass. The flavors carry through the palate, with mocha, blueberry and smoky notes building through the finish. A modern style, yet distinctive, a bit wild." WS94
2008 Ateca Spanish Red, Grenache/ Aragon $13.99
"Inky purple. Ripe boysenberry and blueberry on the nose, with licorice and graphite adding complexity. Juicy dark berry preserve flavors show palate-saturating depth and impressive clarity, picking up smoky minerals with air. Energetic finishing notes of blackberry skin and candied licorice linger with impressive tenacity. According to the importer, the yield for this wine, made from vines reportedly 80 to 120 years of age, was less than one ton per hectare." IWC91
2008 Atteca Spanish Red, Tinto VV - Garnacha $13.99
"Deep ruby. Powerfully scented cassis and blueberry nose, with a more serious espresso character coming up with air. Flavors of dark berries, bitter cherry and mocha combine depth and verve, with a suave vanilla quality adding sweetness. Gains firmness on the impressively long, mineral-driven finish. The vines here are reportedly 80 to 120 years old." IWC90+
2007 Avanthia Spanish Red, Mencia/ Valdeorras $49.99
2008 Avanthia Spanish White, Godello $26.99
We love wines made from Godello. Why? Well, the one you are looking at right now is the perfect example: Lots of fresh fruit flavors, such as pear, melon, and peach fill the air with a packet of minerals on the palate and mouth watering acidity up until the finish. Perfect for grilled prawns or a lime covered ceviche, but also great on its own, or as a way to warm up the taste buds as the guests arrive.
NV Barbadillo Amontillado, Principe Amontillado/ Sherry $35.99
NV Barbadillo Cream Sherry, Cream Sherry Fullrich $7.99
NV Barbadillo Cream Sherry, Pale Cream $4.99
NV Barbadillo Manzanilla, Sherry $8.99
Fino and Manzanilla are lighter sherries aged under a blanket of special yeast called flor which gives them a light crisp acidity and a leesy note reminiscent of aged champagne. Paradoxically for sherry, they are quintessentially fresh and fragile wines that must be drunk promptly to be at their best. Barbadillo actually ships this lemony nutty and slightly smoky version to the US every 3 months so you can enjoy the wine at its peak of freshness. Once open, a bottle is best consumed in within 3 days. This entry level Manzanilla from top Manzanilla producer Barbadillo is light, crisp and refreshing with hints of green apple. It's perfect with olives, cheese and other light appetizers.
NV Barbadillo Oloroso, Full Dry $8.99
NV Barbadillo Oloroso, Sherry "Cuco" (Net) $35.99
"Very harmonious. Full-bodied and noticeably sweet, with integrated chocolate and caramel, and a subtle balance." WS90
NV Barbadillo Pedro Ximenez, La Cilla $27.99
NV Barbadillo Pedro Ximenez, Sherry $11.99
"Less sweet than many in this category, but shows more alcohol too, framing the caramel and cocoa notes in a leaner fashion." WS88
NV Barbadillo Sherry, Fino $8.99
NV Barbadillo Sherry, Obispo Gascon Palo Cortado (Net) $35.97
A PJ's Staff Pick by Justin: This is surely one of the best old solera sherries on the market. The Palo Cortado style is a mix of the tangy, dry, nutty snap of an Amontillado with the smooth, caramelized, deeper hued, slightly sweeter elegance of an Oloroso. Barbadillo's Obispo Gascon deftly achieves this balance. In color it is a delicate, golden-pale amber. The bouquet is ideal for savouring, showing a dry, nutty, smokey, burnt molasses core and notes of creamy milk chocolate, butterscotch, tobacco. On the palate it is very, very smooth with smokey caramel, butterscotch and milk chocolate coming to the fore along with a tangy, nutty, crispness which provides grip. Just a touch of softening sweetness rounds out the flavours into a long, long finish graced by notes of smokey, nutty, burnt molasses. The balance is fantastic. It is perfect with crisp, roasted almonds or pecans and is sure to make your after dinner entertaining (or before) an exceedingly simple, yet sophisticated success.
NV Barbadillo Sherry, San Rafael Dulce $24.99
"Sweet and caramellike, this oloroso is similar in style to a good 10-year-old tawny Port. It has verve, cut and terrific length on the finish. Delicious." WS90
1998 Baron De Ley Spanish Red, Traditional Style, Tempranillo $38.99
The wine shows ripe fruits aromas integrated with a toasted and balsamic character. After time in the glass, these aromas evolve towards seductive traces of infusions, spices and tobacco. The attack in the mouth is very soft, developing an unctuous and round sensation with silky tannins, lively and fresh. Finally, the aftertaste is long and persistent, with fruits and toasted notes, and a pleasant freshness. Pair with roasts, steak, pork, lamb, and hard cheeses.
2000 Bas, Francesca S. Spanish Red, Montsalvat - Garnacha (Net) $45.97
"Enticing aromas of blackberry, licorice and sweet French oak. A sweet, plump, seamless fruit bomb, offering a blast of blackberry and black raspberry flavors. A full, lush wine whose sweet tannins will not get in the way of early enjoyment." IWC90

2004 Bienvenida Spanish Red, El Palo - Toro Tempranillo $15.99
"This firm, focused red shows blackberry, espresso, mineral and floral notes, with structured but not overbearing tannins. Light earthy and spicy notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2012." WS90
2008 Blanco Nieva Spanish White, Rie Franco/ Verdejo $17.99
2001 Blecua Spanish Red, Somontano (Net) $69.97
"The 2001 Blecua is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Garnacha, and Tempranillo. Each varietal spent one year in barrique before being blended and spending 8 more months in French oak. Opaque purple-colored, this opulent wine has a superior nose of pain grille, pencil lead, black cherry, black raspberry, and wild blueberry aromas. On the palate the wine presents as youthful but all the ingredients are present for future greatness. It is densely packed with layers of flavor and well-integrated oak, tannin, and acidity. The finish is long and pure." WA94
2006 Bodega Del Abad Spanish Red, Roble/ Mencia (Net) $13.47
2008 Bodegas Aletta Spanish Red, Aletta Garnacha $6.99
2006 Bodegas Bilbainas Vina Zaco Spanish Red, Tempranillo $10.99

2004 Bodegas Frutos Villar Spanish Red, Muruve Toro Tempranillo $20.99
The wines of Toro are known for their power, but sometimes that power can go to their heads and as a result go to ours as well. Heat equals alcohol, and alcohol blurs fruit, turns tannins into bitter chards, and gives us a headache. And while the Villar is indeed a powerful wine, it's also elegant, and the alcohol, while definitely present, feels well balanced and behaved. There's also a pleasant smokeyness here that lends to a delectable, round finish. This is hearty red, yet one with enough room to play perfectly with grilled meats, especially if that meat happens to be lamb or braised ribs.
2004 Bodegas Las Orcas Spanish Red, Decenio Crianza Tempranillo $14.49
This classis style Rioja is fueled by lots of things we love: natural yeasts, older oak barriques, un-fined, un-filtered.just the pure expression of Tempranillo. Lots of bright cherry, raspberry, and spice. Perfect for meat dishes with a little heat to them, or creative barbecue creations. Also great for roasted veggies and anything with a dab of alioli.
2007 Bodegas Mas Alta Spanish Red, Els Pics $24.49
2004 Bodegas Paganos Spanish Red, Tempranillo El Puntido (Net) $47.97
2003 Bodegas Victoria Spanish Red, Longus Unfiltered/ Tempranillo (Net) $39.97
Quite rich and powerful, this wine displays raspberry ganache plus vanilla laced dark chocoalte and blueberry which meld with a firm mineral spine.
2007 Bodegas Y Vinedos Castro Ventos Spanish Red, Menc¡a/ Bierzo $12.99
Many compare Mencia to Cabernet Franc. This is both totally fair, and totally unfair. Yes, like a Cab Franc from Chinon, the Ventosa shows a distinct earthy minerality: blood, iron, and graphite. At the same time, it's lifted by some sweeter notes, most notably violets and brambleberry bushes. Perhaps the best comparison between the two is that both varietals fly beneath the mainstream slurping radar, and that's a shame. We think that Mencia, like CF, is one of the most character driven grapes on the planet, and makes a fantastic pairing for rustic, well-seasoned fare.
2008 Borsao Spanish Red, "Tres Picos" Garnacha/ Campo de Borja $13.99
"Inky ruby. Highly complex bouquet of cherry, dark berry liqueur, iron, tobacco and dried flowers; reminded me a wine from Graves. Tangy cherry and cassis flavors are on the primal side initially but soften and gain sweetness with air. Fine tannins add grip to the long, spicy finish, which repeats the iron note. This is very promising." IWC90(+?)
2006 Breton Chinon, Cabernet Franc $24.99
One of the defining characteristics of Cabernet Franc is pencil-lead, but not all Cab-Franc expresses this enticing mineral aroma. This offering from Catherine and Pierre Breton delivers the graphite nose in a major way, but despite its powerful scent, it's also light bodied and acidic enough for a variety of cuisine. It sort of finds that perfect middle ground between wild funky accents and a mouth watering texture that makes us fantasize about pairing this with some rabbit or cassoulet.
2009 Burgans Spanish White, Albarino (Net) $11.97
2004 Cadozos Spanish Red, Tinto Tempranillo $43.99
1999 Callejo Spanish Red, Gran Reserva $64.99
2003 Callejo Spanish Red, Seleccion Familia - 1.5L (1.5L) $239.99
2004 Callejo Spanish Red, Selection Res.Fami/ Tempranillo $99.99
"This assertive red shows a powerful, angular structure, with muscular tannins, dark flavors of licorice, toast, tobacco and mineral and a characteristic gamy note. Takes no prisoners." WS93
2006 Cambra, Rafael Spanish Red, DOS Valencia $23.99
2003 Cambra, Rafael Spanish Red, Minimun/ Valencia (Net) $43.97
"Totally different than the Dos but every bit as good is the 2003 Minimum, composed of 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Franc. This beast of a wine was aged 16 months in new French oak and bottled unfiltered. Almost black in color, with coaxing, aromas of smoke, black currants, tar, licorice and vanilla bean reluctantly emerge. On the palate the wine is massive and mouth-filling yet harmonious with tannin, alcohol, fruit, and acidity in balance. ... If it blossoms as I think it will, my score will look stingy indeed." WA92+
A top candidate for the greatest MourvŠdre coming out of Spain today. Midnight ink in the glass with extraordinary scents of super-ripe crushed blackberries and plums. Incredibly dense and palate saturating with great dark fruit, complexity and superb balance. This powerhouse is amazingly light on its feet and will age for at least ten years.
2004 Cambra, Rafael Spanish Red, Uno Monastell blend with Cabernet $25.99
One of the best Monastrells (MourvŠdres) of Spain, from Rafael Cambra, a man possessed with drive, energy and innovation. He brings the best out of old vine holdings in the emerging region of Valencia, near the better known wine region of Jumilla. The 2004 "Uno" is his best yet, showing fantastic power combined with silky elegance. The nose offers deep black plum and blueberry notes with damp earth minerality and hints of spice. The palate is a rush of ripe black fruit flavors accented by old vine minerality with beautifully integrated acidity, a silky, juicy middle, and a long deep finish. Decant to serve now or drink over the next 10 years.

2006 Capcanes Spanish Red, Kosher Peraj Petit (Net) $18.97
2007 Capcanes Spanish Red, Mas Donis Barrica $11.49
A terrific value wine that packs a lot of bright red fruit-strawberry, cranberry, raspberry-into a smoky, spicy treat. It's a medium bodied ball of fun, but feels a little lighter in the mouth despite its rich presentation. A perfect everyday red, that would pair wonderfully with grilled meats, roasted veggies, or soft cheese. This is a wine you don't have to think too hard about and is the perfect way to round out your evening after a long day at the office.
2004 Capcanes Spanish Red, Peraj Ha'Abib Montsant Kosher (Net) $47.97
2006 Care Spanish Red, Syrah/Tempranillo $10.49
Rated 90 in The Wine Advocate this superb value is reminiscent of a high quality C“te de Rh“ne. It is a blend of equal proportions Syrah, Garnacha and Tempranillo begins with notes of spicy black cherry which are followed by an elegant bouquet of garrigue plus hints of crushed stone, black olive and lavender. On the palate it is ripe and juicy, with a racy spine that supports ample fruit. Bright blackberry and black cherry flavors are interwoven with myriad spice tones and hints of grilled bread, an almost creamy minerality and touches of black coffee. Drink this outstanding everyday buy on its own or with medium weight fare like roasted root vegetables drizzled with olive oil and sea salt, ham and GruyŠre on a baguette or roasted pork shoulder.
2006 Carodorum Spanish Red, Tempranillo Carodo/ Toro (Net) $16.97
2008 Casa Castillo Spanish Red, Monastrell (Net) $12.49
"No tasting note was given." WA88
2007 Casa Castillo Spanish Red, Monastrell $9.99
2009 Casa De La Vega Spanish White, Rueda Verdejo $10.99
Yellow straw in the glass with pretty aromas of citrus and honey blossoms. The palate is well rounded, with plush citrus and melon fruits flavors. The lingering finish is succulently dry and quite refreshing.
2005 Casa Mira Spanish Red, Mira/ Monastrell Cabernet Blend $22.99
"Deep crimson-colored, the wine has an excellent bouquet of pain grille, mineral/creosote, black cherry, and blueberry. This leads to a smooth-textured, focused, elegant effort with ample spicy fruit, very good depth and breadth, and a long, pure finish. " WA93
2005 Castano Spanish Red, Solanera/ Monastrell (Net) $11.99
"Saturated purple. Smoky raspberry and cherry on the nose, with a sexy mocha quality adding complexity. Fleshy, round dark fruit liqueur flavors caress rather than pummel the palate. Gentle tannins arrive late to add structure but this is all about silky, juicy fruit." IWC90
2004 Castano Vina Al Lado De La Casa Spanish Red, Monastrell Blend/ Yecla $20.99
The nose shows some serious chocolate, raisins, and prunes, while the palate reveals licorice, and more dark chocolate surrounded by a warm and full body. It's a robust little fellow that speaks to the hot climate, limestone soil, and tradition of its homeland; the tiny Spanish wine region called Yecla.
2008 Castillo Del Baron Spanish Red, Monastrell (Net) $8.47
2004 Castillo Labastida Rioja, Reserva/ Tempranillo $18.99

NV Cavas Hill Sparkling Wine, Brut Reserva $10.99
2004 Celler Del Pont Spanish Red, Lo Givot Grenache Blend (Net) $56.97
"This tiny "garage" operation has a total of 5 hectares (11 acres) of vineyard. The 2004 Lo Givot is 33% Garnacha, 32% Carinena, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Syrah. Inky purple, the wine has an expressive perfume of damp earth, pencil lead, pepper, black cherry, and blueberry. This is followed by a full-bodied wine with layers of spicy black fruit flavors, excellent concentration, complexity, superb balance, and a well-delineated, lengthy finish." WA94
2009 Chivite Rose, Gran Feudo/ Garnacha Tinta $8.99
2004 Cillar De Silos Spanish Red, Altos De Revilla/ Tempranillo $44.99
"The 2004 Altos de Revilla, a wine produced only in great years of which this is the first. It is a single vineyard selection from 60-year-old vines. The wine was barrel fermented and aged in 100% new French oak for 18 months. It offers a more complex nose than the Torresilos with notes of mocha and espresso, toasty oak, vanilla, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. ... an outstanding wine ..." WA91
Altos de Revilla is Cillar de Silos' top wine, made from a small, single vineyard plot. It is one of the gems of the great 2004 vintage. Aged for 18 months in new French oak, it offers intense aromatics of black cherry, mocha, mint leaf, and herbs, with enchanting hints of smoked meat. The palate is even more compelling. Deep, dark, and dense-almost chewy-black fruit flavors glide across the palate. The mid-palate reveals rapturous notes of chocolate, smoke, liquid minerals, and dried meats. This incredible effort is a powerhouse that can be decanted now for immediate enjoyment; however, those with the patience to cellar it for two years or more will reap even richer rewards! Only five hundred cases made.
2007 Cillar De Silos Spanish Red, Tinta del Pais/ Crianza (Net) $18.97
"... from estate vineyards averaging 35 years of age. The wine was aged 13 months in French oak of which 50% was new. Purple in color, it exhibits an attractive nose of toast, tobacco, herbs, black cherry, and licorice. Full-bodied, in the mouth the wine is firm and balanced with abundant black fruits and ripe tannins. There is an overall impression of elegance along with excellent concentration of flavors leading to a long, pure finish." WA90
2008 Cillar De Silos Spanish White, "El Quintanal" Rueda/ Verdejo $12.49
2004 Cims De Porrera Spanish Red, Priorat Classic $80.99
"The 2004 Classic is 90% old-vine Carinena and 10% Garnacha aged for 20 months in new French oak. Deep purple-colored, it delivers a superb perfume of mineral, earth, mushroom, coffee, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry. Considerably more structured than the Solanes, it is a mouth-filling, powerful, nearly opulent wine that demands 3-5 years of cellaring to reveal its full potential." WA93
2008 Clar De Castanyer Spanish Red, Xarello $18.99
We've got a wild one here, but one you should absolutely not miss! Fermented in open chestnut casks, this 100% Xarello from Catalonia has that much sought after oxidized character we love. If you dig on the wines from Jura and the whites of Lopez de Heredia (and you should!) then you will go crazy for the Clar de Castanyer. Brimming with minerals, almonds, and brioche, this eastern Spanish scent show is rich yet light. We had it with some cured herring, olive oil, and red peppers, and went gaga for it. Although not for everyone, those who understand this style of winemaking will be rewarded for taking this cult wine home and experimenting with the pairings. Anything involving seafood should work, or even a simple platter of olives and nuts would kill.

2006 Condado de Haza Spanish Red, Ribera Del Duero/ Termpranillo (Net) $23.97
"Bright ruby. Vivid raspberry, blackberry, anise and floral scents are fresh and pure. Juicy dark berry flavors are complemented by succulent herbs and dark chocolate, becoming sweeter with air. Leaves strong floral pastille and berry liqueur notes behind, finishing with excellent cut and precision. Very nicely focused wine." IWC92
2005 Conde, J.C. Spanish Red, Neo Punta Esencia $73.99
"The 2004 Neo Punta Esencia is made only in the very best vintages (2004 certainly qualifies in Ribera del Duero). The wine receives the 200% new oak treatment (12 months in new oak with racking into another set of new oak for an additional 4 months) and is bottled unfiltered. The wine is nearly black in color and has already soaked up much of the new oak. The nose is super-expressive and complex with pain grille, black currant, blackberry liqueur, and blueberry jam holding sway. Densely packed and stacked, with layer upon layer of ripe fruit, its tannins virtually concealed, this full-bodied, beautifully balanced wine is a near-monument." WA96
2005 Condita Spanish Red, Tempranillo $11.97
From the rich and elegant 2005 vintage, this vibrant red announces itself with a deep purple color and an expressive nose. Notes of freshly crushed black cherry, plum and kirsch are followed by spice cake and red licorice tones and hints of tar and clay. On the palate the wine is expressive yet focused. The attack begins with juicy vanilla-scented black cherry flavors that are followed by blackberry, plum and raspberry coulis notes. On the mid-palate there is a great juicy lift that keeps the wine from being heavy as it delivers more concentrated blackberry and raspberry and slides with a velvet touch into a finish of mineral and dark chocolate-laced red fruit. Few wines these days offer such power and drinkability at so low a price.
2001 Contador Spanish Red, "La Cueva del Contador"/ Tempranillo (Net) $59.97
"Rich perfume of berry fruit, spice box, new saddle leather, cigar smoke, and earth. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and concentrated. Impressively pure and rich." WA90
2006 Contador Spanish Red, La Cueva/ Tempranillo (Net) $61.97
"The purple-colored 2006 La Cueva del Contador was aged for 12 months in new French oak and bottled without fining or filtration. It gives up an outstanding perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, damp earth, incense, and black cherry. Opulent on the palate, it is dense, rich, and full-flavored with enough ripe tannin to evolve for 4-6 years. Drink this lengthy effort from 2014 to 2031. No Contador was produced in the challenging 2006 vintage and was instead blended into the Cueva cuvee. All of the Benjamin Romeo wines are 100% Tempranillo." WA94+
2007 Contador Spanish Red, Tinto/ Tempranillo $364.99
"The 2004 Contador is even better than the 2003 if that is possible. More expressive aromatically (a characteristic of 2004) this wine is more tightly wound and backward than the 2003. Unlike the 2003 it demands a minimum of a decade of cellaring and could well last for 75-100 years if well stored." WA100
2001 Contino Spanish Red, Reserva (Net) $35.97
"Dark red. Youthful, expansive, oak-driven aromas of blackberry, cherry liqueur, cola and roasted coffee. Lush, creamy, medium-weight wine with good depth to its dark fruit flavors; more tangy mineral and licorice notes appear on the back end. The long finish features firm tannins and a lingering note of cherry preserves." IWC92
2001 Contino Spanish Red, Vina Olivo Reserva (Net) $119.97
"Dark ruby. Suave, deeply concentrated aromas of dark berries, candied plum, licorice, graphite, toasty oak spices and dried violet convey an impression of power. Lush and velvety, with superb concentration of blackberry and cassis flavors accented by abundant but well-integrated oak and lifted by tangy minerals. Finishes with youthful tannins, impressive length and smoky, mineral-tinged notes of blackberry and bitter chocolate. This should age wonderfully." IWC92
2008 Cortijo Spanish Red, Tempranillo $8.99
2006 Cosme Palacio Y Hermanos Spanish Red, Rioja $9.99
2004 Coto De Imaz Spanish Red, Tempranillo Reserva $20.99
2001 CVNE Spanish Red, Imperial Reserva $43.99
"Medium red. Spicy redcurrant and cherry on the nose, with high-pitched rose and mineral accents and a whiff of smoked meat. Suave, understated red fruit flavors are gently braced by dusty tannins and take on anise and roasted coffee flavors with air. Tangy cherry and licorice flavors cling on the long, youthfully taut finish." IWC90(+?)
2001 CVNE Spanish Red, Pagos De Vina Real (Net) $89.97
"Alluring aromas of lilac, wet stone and cassis bush lead to balanced, lively, complex flavors, with fruit, herbs and minerals all playing their parts. An elegant red with a real sense of character." WS92
2004 CVNE Spanish Red, Reserva Tempranillo (Net) $21.97
"This supple, polished red delivers black cherry, tobacco, coffee and light herb flavors over moderate tannins. Balanced, fresh and clean, with a spicy, floral finish. Drink now through 2012." WS88
2008 D.Ventura Spanish Red, Galicia/ Mencia Pano do Lobo $16.99
Sometimes it's the most precarious landscapes that offer the best fruit. The steep terraced vineyards of Ribeira Sacra might not be fun to work with, but boy are we glad somebody is. This is a smooth little number, austere almost, with black licorice, minerals, and bay leaf. But there are berry notes here as well to balance out the savory ones. We think this would be lovely with a peppered steak or a little spicy sausage.
2006 Demora Spanish Red, Bodegas Vinas Del Cen/ Tempranillo $25.99
This 100% Tempranillo from Castilla y Le¢n has been aged 18 months in new French oak, which rounds out the edge of this otherwise untamed wine. Think young, wild strawberries, with chewy tannins and a lighter body than you might imagine from the first sniff. There's also a twist of spice and game meat, which adds an impressive layer to this already nuanced creation.

"The entry level Atauta comes from 60-to-150 year-old, biodynamically farmed, mostly ungrafted Tempranillo bush vines. The wine is aged in 100% French oak of which 20% is new. Dark Ruby/Purple in color, it has an expressive nose of spice box, coffee, black cherry and blackberry. Made in a racy style, with good acidity, this wine admirabley combines ripe, sweet fruit with elegance. Drink it over the next 6-8 years." WA92

2008 Ducado De Altan Spanish White, Rueda/ Verdejo $10.99
For easy drinking, crisp whites at killer prices, you're not going to beat Spain, and wines like this Verdejo are the reason why. Grapefruit, lemon, peach, spring flowers.if there's something in nature that reminds you of refreshment, then this guy has probably got it. The palate finishes the job with a nice balance of acidity and some crushed shell notes that telegraph this as a seafood wine. Will also work great with chicken, light pastas, and is perfect for some good old fashioned quaffing.

2007 El Nido Spanish Red, Clio Monastrell $39.99
The '06 incarnation of Clio is deep purple in color and emits a fragrant perfume of creamy blackberry and black currant laced with vanilla and pine needle, underpinned by hints of espresso. On the palate sweet black cherry and black plum flavors ride on a spine of mineral and acidity which is wrapped in a cloak of fresh roasted coffee laced with blueberry pie. The tannins are polished and soft, the extract full, and the finish is long, echoing with tones of milk chocolate and blueberry pie   la mode. This wine is just in and will benefit from decanting or a short nap of two to three months. This is a plush mouthfull for the price.
2006 El Nido Spanish Red, El Nido/ Monastrell (Net) $104.97
2008 El Perro Berde Spanish White, Verdejo Rueda $13.99
Medium straw-colored, the bouquet offers up mineral, spice box, citrus, and floral notes. This leads to a medium-bodied wine with excellent concentration, savory flavors, a good balance of fruit and acidity, and a long, fruit-filled finish. Drink it over the next 1-2 years.
2005 Emilio Moro Spanish Red, Malleolus Valderras/ Tempranillo (Net) $159.97
"The 2005 Mallelous de Valderramiro is 100% Tempranillo sourced from a single 85-year-old vineyard with tiny yields. The wine went through malolactic fermentation in new American oak with batonnage followed by aging in new French oak for 18 months. Inky purple-hued, the wine has stunning aromatics, kinky and complex. Notes of mineral/slate, pencil lead, espresso, wild blueberry and blackberry lead to a layered, opulent wine with superb concentration and great length." WA97

2008 Espelt Grenache, Saulo Tinto (Net) $10.97
Nestled between Salvador Dali's hometown of Figueres and Ferran Adri…'s surreal culinary laboratory, El Bulli, lies the small family vineyard of Espelt. Perhaps some of the magical genius of both men has translated to this bottle of 100% Garnacha, which is full of bright red berries and spice. A classic Spanish expression of the varietal that is round and lush, with a touch of pleasant tartness. Great for spicy sausage, Manchego cheese, or inspiring your next mad endeavor, whether it be in the kitchen, on the canvas, or just braving the MTA.

The wine spent 16 months in French oak before being bottled unfiltered. It is deep purple in color with complex aromas of vanilla, black currants, cherries and mocha. On the palate it is full-bodied, structured, well balanced, and has a lengthy finish." WA92
2006 Finca Luzon Spanish Red, Altos De Luzon/ Monastrell Blend (Net) $11.97
"Dark red. Suave, oak-spiced cherry and cassis on the nose, with a gentle vanilla undertone. Sweet dark fruit flavors are round and supple, with soft tannins building on the back. Picks up a spicy quality on the long, juicy finish. The fruit and oak work very well together." IWC90

2008 Finca Luzon Spanish Red, Jumilla/ Monastrell $7.99
2006 Finca Torremilanos Spanish Red, Cyclo/ Tempranillo $44.99
"This meticulously produced wine is sourced from 85- to 100+-year-old Tempranillo vines with a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the blend. Torremilanos makes its own barrels, purchasing, aging, and coopering the wood. The 2004 Cyclo is even better than the 2003, more expressive aromatically, firmer and more structured on the palate. Purchasers of the 2004 should be prepared to cellar it for 5-7 years. It will drink well through 2025. If I were a budding wine collector with limited discretionary income, this is the type of wine that I would be laying down." WA95

NV Font I Jordana Sparkling Wine, Cava $17.99
Over the last year, we've uncovered a number of natural wines (i.e. minimal S02, indigenous yeasts, organic grapes etc.) and we're psyched to see that the trend has now crossed over into sparklers as well. This 100% au natural vino has lovely, tight bubbles, toasty brioche notes, and tons of rustic characteristics we love. It takes a long slow fermentation process to produce this wine without the quick and dirty techniques even many fine Champagne houses use, but it's worth it. This is Cava so good, so nuanced, you could even decant it and drink it as a foxy still wine. But hey, bubbles are nice too!
2001 Fra Fulco Spanish Red, Carignan (Net) $49.97
"This blend of 60% Carignan, 30% Grenache, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon is fashioned from incredibly old vines ... A stunning perfume of acacia flowers, blueberries, and black fruits jumps from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored 2001. It possesses terrific purity, opulence, and richness as well as a layered mouthfeel." WA93

NV Gonzalez Byass Palo Cortado, Sherry "Apostoles" VORS (375ml) (.375L) (Net) $39.97
A classic Palo Cortado with the amber color, concentrated fruit and aromas of oak that only extended barrel aging can create, Apostoles has the right to Sherrys highest designation, V.O.R.S., indicating that it is over 30 years old. Almond and pine nut mingle in the nose, the rich raisiny acidity and toasted nut flavors are offset by just a point of caramel sweetness, and everything merges into full, succulent finish which seems never to fade, let alone disappear. Perfect balance.
NV Gonzalez Byass Pedro Ximenez, Sherry "Noe Pedro Ximenez" VORS375ml (.375L) (Net) $39.97
Opaque black with prune and dried fig notes in the warm nose. Very smooth, dense and very sweet on the attack with prune flavors from which emerge notes of chocolate, sweet wood and molasses and a balancing hint of cake spice and acidity. Has a warm, unending lip-smacking finish with amazing drinkability for a wine this sweet-a tour de force of smooth balance and complexity!
2006 Gotim Bru Spanish Red, Costers del Segre $11.99
This is a beautiful blend that merges Spanish traditions with influences from the Bordeaux winemakers who brought their grapes south after the phylloxera outbreak in the 1800s. French varietals aside-in this case Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache-the Tempranillo does the heavy lifting here, and the wine has a decidedly Spanish character. Green peppercorn, and other dashes from the spice-rack fill the air, followed by a generous, and hefty palate that is completed by a satisfying finish. There's also a healthy amount of earth that adds the type of complexity New World blends, and those influenced by them, fail to compete with.
2009 Gramona Muscat, Gessami $14.99
A Spanish white that drinks like an off-dry German Riesling. Lots of peach flavors, and floral notes as well, but all held together by a tantalizing zip of acidity. Starts out with fruit, but finishes dry. Totally gulpable, and perfect for washing down a cheese course, or even some food with a little heat to it like Thai or Chinese. Also a beautiful wine to spend a long, hot summer day with or to start the dinner party off with an elegant note.

NV Herdade Do Esporao Alandra Bra Blend, Red Blend/ Alentejo $4.99
Not all Bordeaux needs to be aged for thirty years. Here's one that's meant to be drunk right now, like this very second! 2005 wasn't just ideal for the big houses and petite chateau like Larose Trintaudon also benefited from the pitch-perfect growing conditions, especially if they minded their crops properly. Well the folks at Trintaudon have certainly taken care of business and it shows in this stellar Cab/Merl blend. Lots of ripe plumb fruit, gentle yet firm tannins, and a silky texture make this classic right bank cuvee a no-brainer for Bordeaux bargain hunters. Perfect for red meat dishes and for those who like to dress to impress, without transferring the deed to their house.
NV Herdade Do Esporao Alandra Bra Blend, White Blend/ Alentejo $4.99
Almost too delicious for the price! Almost. Lots of bright red berries, silky texture, and easy drinkability make this the perfect everyday red/party wine. This is 'lunch' wine, i.e. the kind of wine we'd love to have with a sandwich or some baguette and cheese. Would also be great with a little chill and could be the perfect backyard/park/picnic vino. At this price, you can enjoy some straight-up guilt free quaffing, so stock up! Heck, it's almost cheaper than water, and a million times tastier.
NV Hidalgo, Vinicola Amontillado, Sherry/ Viejo Palomino (Net) $109.97
A truly rare wine and a true terroir Sherry. The wine's origins are from manzanillas produced in Hidalgo's monopole Pastrana vineyard in Sanlucar de Barrameda's albariza soils. This wine carries no specific indication of age because even the Hidalgos no longer know the age of the ancient wines in the blend. It is a tiny release from casks which were reserved for family events until recently. Authoritative English critic Clive Coates scored the wine a 18.5/20 in his rigorous scale and said, "Dry nose. Old amontillado odour. This is properly dry, well matured. Intense, mellow and very very classy. Marvellous depth and complexity. Very very long on the finish. Very fine indeed." It shows ethereal hazelnut, fine tea, vanilla and a hint of brine on the nose, then great power, complexity and length in the mouth. A connoisseur's sherry, rated 93 by the Wine Advocate.
NV Hidalgo, Vinicola Oloroso, Sherry/ "Viejo" (Net) $114.97
"Great aromas, like the sea air on the isle of Skye, with salt tang, peat and a wet earth note. Dry and finely etched on the palate, forceful and intensely flavored, this has balance and personality in spades." WS92
NV Hidalgo, Vinicola Palo Cortado, Sherry/ Viejo (Net) $119.97
Buying any Palo Cortado is a gesture of trust in the bodega, if only because no two bodegas quite agree on what a Palo Cortado is. This wine carries no specific indication of age because even the Hidalgos no longer know the age of the ancient wines in the blend. It is a tiny release from casks which were reserved for family events until recently. Authoritative English critic Clive Coates scored the wine a 18.5/20 in his rigorous scale and said, "Light colour. Real deep fino in colour. Rich complex nose. This is of very high quality. An austere version. Pungent. Very good grip. Really very dry. But ripe and complex and very classy. Very fine." At a recent blind tasting in New York of all the greatest Palo Cortados (for which bottles of many luxury cuv‚es not sold here had to be shipped from Spain), this was the top-rated wine. A connoisseur's sherry. Rated 97 by the Wine Advocate.

This extremely low production, old vine, single vineyard Rioja is stunningly deep, powerful and expressive. The nose is richly fragrant with notes of blackberry and smoky dark cherry that blend into tones of spice box, black licorice and earth. The wine erupts onto the palate, dishing out ultra-rich red and black fruit, spice cake, and mineral tones by the armful. Seamless acidity tempers the superb extract and makes for a beautiful and flamboyantly styled modern Rioja. We find it even better than the 98 point scoring 2004!
2006 La Terrera Spanish Red, Rioja $13.49
This blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha is a classic Rioja, from its ruby red color and pretty aromatics of cherry fruit and warm earth backed by a hint of baking spice and a note of cigar box. The palate is loaded with strawberry, black cherry fruit flavors and notes of cedar and cinnamon. This is a very sexy Rioja and it will work beautifully with grilled veal chops or braised pork loin.
2006 Lacuesta, Martinez Spanish Red, Rioja $12.99
Made from 80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, and 5% Graciano, this traditional style Rioja is further proof that the best deals in Continental wine still come from Spain. As with all Crianzas, the vignerons at ML have already done some of the aging for you (3 years), and this, plus the marriage of American oak, has created a soft, lush wine that begs to be drunk tonight (for the young fresh cherry fruit) or to be aged 10-12 more years (to bring out some of the leather and Asian spice). A fun, affordable wine, that wants more than just the cool confines of your wine cellar/Eurocave, but also grilled meats, chorizo fueled tapas, or even a rich, squid-inked paella.
2005 Lacuesta, Martinez Spanish Red, Tempranillo Ventil $25.99
With over a hundred years under their belt, Martinez Lacuesta is a name that is synonymous with Rioja, and have been grabbing tasters by the buds with every vintage. The Ventilla 71 is a beautiful expression of this classic property and merges tradition with modern influence. Its bright red fruit; soft tannins, and vanilla accents were enough to win the hearts and minds of Decanter magazine, who chose it as The Best Reserva Rioja from 2005. We agree, and think its expression falls somewhere between Artadi and Muga Reserva. In other words, big yet elegant.
2007 Lacuesta, Martinez Spanish Red, Tinto/ Tempranillo $10.99
This is a bright and juicy Rioja over-performer is made predominantly from Tempranillo with Mazuelo and Graciano blended in. On the nose red cherry and raspberry aromas permeate, accented by hints of vanilla, stone and just a touch of soil. In the mouth the wine is pure and vibrant. Cherry and crushed red berries wrap around a precise core of acidity and are lifted by hints of chalk and subtle, rounding oak tones. 2008 Lagar De Costa Spanish White, Albarino/ Rias Baixas $15.99
If we were sent to a desert island and could only bring one type of wine for seafood (which presumably there would be plenty of!) we'd choose Albarino. Albarino was born to accompany grilled, saut‚ed, or pan-seared fish-especially of the salt-water variety. Why? Well the Lagar de Costa is a good primer. It's got that citrus zip, and mineral touch, that meld so nicely with the ocean's bounty and brings out the salinity in shell-fish.
2008 Lager De Cervera Spanish White, Albarino $18.99
The 2008 Lagar de Cervera shows the beautiful mineral elegance that is typical of this vintage. A cooler growing season gave many Rias Baixas wines beautiful acidity with underlying mineral power. Given the typical ripeness of fruit that Cervera usually achieves, the balance of vintage qualities and the winemaking practices create a harmonious, eminently drinkable Albarino.

2007 Las Brisas Spanish Red, Criana Tempranillo $11.99
Oh, Zamora, thank you. Thank you for bringing us such layered wines at such killer prices. Rich forest soil, old school tobacco store, and that scent that emanates from the spice-rack of a well-loved kitchen, fill the air between the dark, almost black liquid and the tip of your nose. The richness continues on the palate, with a creamy texture nuzzled with coffee notes, bacon, and even more spice. Despite this fireworks display, there's also something pretty about this wine and not as overwhelming as our notes might indicate. A terrifically complex wine at a terrific price. Grab some.

2004 Pago Del Ama Spanish Red, Syrah/ Tierra de Castilla $39.99
Deep, dark, and brooding. No, not like an undergraduate poetry major, but lush and generous. Think smoke, lardon, and midnight dark fruit. This is indulgent stuff, but not so much that it would kill the meal. That is, unless it was light fare. This much intensity requires meat: seared, grilled, or braised.
2007 Pago Florentino Spanish Red, La Mancha / Syrah $17.99
A PJ's exclusive! When we tasted this Syrah from the land Quixote, we instantly offered to buy the entire vintage! This is a wine that can turn windmills into giants, and no, not because of the alcohol. It's just that we have never had a Syrah this fantastic outside of the Rhone Valley, let alone Spain. There's lots of meaty dark fruit on the nose, dusted with pepper, while the palate seals the deal with a tender roundness and a pleasant, clean finish. This wine is a luxury, that in a blind tasting would easily have patrons guessing the cost at $40-$60 a bottle. Needles to say, we are beyond excited to have locked this down, and PJ's is now the only place in America to buy this wine. Grab what you can!
2005 Paisajes V Spanish Red, Valsalado/ Tempranillo $36.99
"The 2005 Paisajes V is 40% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha, 10% Graciano, and 10% Mazuelo aged for 14 months in new Allier barrels. It delivers a classic perfume of pain grille, mineral, cassis, and blackberry. Well-delineated on the palate, it is rich and layered with gobs of sweet fruit already beginning to exhibit complexity." WA94
2004 Paixar Spanish Red, Mencia/ Bierzo (Net) $64.97
"Inky ruby. Potent cherry and dark berry aromas are expansive and pure, and perked up by spicy cinnamon and clove. Strong blueberry and blackcurrant flavors are complicated by floral pastille and mineral elements that carry through the finish. This gained weight and sweetness with air, offering a range of dark berry liqueur impressions and outstanding persistence." IWC93
2005 Palacios Remondo Spanish Red, La Montesa/ Tempranillo (Net) $15.97

"The Pardevalles winery, located in the new D.O. of Tierras de Leon (created in 2005), works exclusively with the indigenous Prieto Picudo grape. The 2005 Gamonal, which was aged for 6 months in a mixture of new and used French and American oak, is purple-colored with an excellent nose of vanilla, blueberry and blackberry. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, elegant wine with ripe, sweet fruit ..." WA90
NV Paul Cheneau Sparkling Wine, Lady Of Spain Brut $9.99
2008 Pedro Escudero Spanish White, Verdejo/ Rueda $10.49
NV Pedro Romero Amontillado, VORS/ 500ml (.500L) (Net) $79.97
This is a fantastic example of rare, old Amontillado. The VORS designation means that the wines that make up the blend average at least 30 years of age. The result is a gorgeous and complex nose of toasted hazelnuts, caramel, and flor notes. It has great snap, intensity and depth on the palate, only eclipsed by the smoothness and complexity of the finish. A connoisseur's sherry.
NV Pedro Romero Oloroso, Oloroso VORS- 500ml (.500L) (Net) $72.97
NV Pedro Romero Palo Cortado, VORS 500ml (.500L) $85.99
2008 Peitan Spanish White, Rias Baixas/ Albarino $11.99
Like a lazy dog on a hot summer's day, Albarino grapes love the sun and like to mature at a relaxed pace. That's OK with us, just so long as they keep yielding wines as delicious as the Peitan. The first thing the Peitan's audience will notice is her tropical nose followed by some hints of ocean air. The palate is medium bodied, crisp, and bracing enough for shellfish. Rias Baixas is the place for Albarino, and with wines as good as the Peitan, it should remain so for a good long time.
2006 Penascal Spanish Red, Tempranillo $8.49
NV Perez Barquero Amontillado, "Gran Barquero" Sherry/Montilla-Moriles $14.99
This dry Amontillado is a rich nut brown color with expressive aromas of caramel, hazelnut, butterscotch and smokey vanilla. With a beautifully classic and bracing snap on the palate, it offers additional notes of milk chocolate, butter, corn silk and smoke that are capped by amazing length. The ideal ap‚ritif to pair with toasted almonds, olives, cured meats, boldly flavored appetizers or even with batter fried fresh fish or southern fried chicken. It also works as a bold after dinner sipper.

NV Perez Barquero Oloroso, "Gran Barquero" Sherry/Montilla-Moriles $14.99
This rich but classically dry Oloroso is a beautifully clear deep amber color and offers scents of toasted almond, toffee, and a hint of coffee on the nose. It is opulent and intense, yet refined on the palate with cascading layers of caramel flavors that taper into notes of milk chocolate, toasted nut skin, vanilla, ash and smoke. The finish is long and dry with nutty caramel overtones. Olorosos pair beautifully with nutty cheeses like aged Gouda, Riserva Parmigiano Reggiano, Manchego or Mahon along with just about any caramelized or nutty dessert like crŠme brul‚e, an almond croissant or chocolate hazelnut cake. It is also a favorite after dinner accompaniment to fine cigars and serves as an excellent, lower alcohol alternative to brandy.
NV Perez Barquero Pedro Ximenez, "Gran Barquero" Sherry/Montilla-Moriles $14.99
This layered sweet wine displays a deep, glossy brown color and is truly indulgent. The nose features raisin, pumpkin pie spice, tobacco leaf and pure sugar cane notes. The palate is rich, expansive and beautifully balanced with honeyed, almost milk chocolatey raisin and smoke flavors. It is a very long and elegant PX and finishes with expressive coffee, tea leaf and buttered popcorn tones. Fantastic with blue cheese, toasted nuts, dried fruit, poured over vanilla ice cream or for something truly decadent, pair it with chocolate glazed doughnuts, sticky buns or Paris-Brest pastry.

2007 Piedra Spanish Red, Azul Toro Tempranillo $14.99
2005 Pingus Spanish Red, Tempranillo (Net) $674.97
"The 2005 Pingus spent 18 months in new oak. It is purple/black and a bit muted at present. However, notes of toasty new oak, mineral, scorched earth, espresso, blueberry, and blackberry can be discerned. It is a true tour de force. Kudos to Peter Sisseck for a brilliant and enthralling set of wines." WA99
2005 Pinol, Josefina Spanish White, Terra Alta D.O. (.500L) (Net) $19.97
A singular and highly expressive dessert wine. Creamy vanilla, dried papaya and peach curd lead into honeysuckle and toast, plus hints of apricot pit. Balanced acidity elevates the palate into a long finish.
2006 Pintia Spanish Red, Tinto de Toro $64.99
Ruby red with a purple hue rounding the rim of the glass. Blackberry, dark cherry, espresso and sweet sage dominate the nose followed by a note of warm oak. Deep red berry fruit dominates the attack and is closely trailed by anise spice and a touch of saddle leather. Broad shouldered tannins loom on the mid-palate give way to silken acidity and a highly elegant finish. This is a beautiful wine, and will age gracefully in your cellar for at least ten years.
2005 Pintia Spanish Red, Toro (Net) $58.97
"Bodegas Pintia is owned by Vega Sicilia. Pintia is located further west along the Duero River inside the warmer D.O. of Toro. The estate owns 96 hectares of land. The first vintage released was the 2001. As for the 2005 Pintia, it is 100% Tinta de Toro aged for one year in new French and American oak. Opaque purple-colored, it offers a complex perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a full-bodied, ripe, layered wine with intense flavors, serious complexity, and exceptional length." WA95
2007 Pinturas Spanish Red, Crianza Albalos $11.49
The Pinturas is an inky night sky in the glass and shows deep layers of caramel, black cherry, and building-block tannins. Being a Crianza, the extra time in barrel has left it rounded with some diabolically good accents of chestnuts, clove, and fresh cracked pepper. There's also a healthy helping of black fruit here that envelops the mouth creates a nice balance between the hefty tannins. A structured wine to be sure, and one destined to pair up with some lamb, ribs, or a steak.
2007 Pirineos Spanish White, Montesierra $7.99
NV Poema Sparkling Wine, Viura Cava $8.99
Vibrant aromas of ripe peaches, pears and toasted bread with a hint of spice fill the nose. The palate is dry with a rich, creamy texture. Layers of flavor include orange rind and spice that persists through an elegant finish. - Winemaker's notes

2005 Quinta Sardonia Spanish Red, Sardon Duero Tempranillo (Net) $59.97
2008 Quo Spanish Red, Old Vines/ Garnacha Campo de Borja $14.99
Here's some logical advice that not enough producers take to heart: Only grow varietals where they will thrive and produce stellar wine! Well the folks at Quo have done just that with Garnacha, a varietal that loves the extreme conditions of Aragon, Spain. The result is a beautiful and complex marriage of wood-spice, vanilla, and bright red fruits. The Quo is a delectably moody thunderstorm on the nose, but is surprisingly elegant once it hits the taste-buds. Think strawberries and spice, and you've got yourself a starting point for a wine that continues to unfold and develop as the evening passes. Perfect for hearty fair, especially red meat dishes with a little kick to them.
2004 Ramiros Spanish Red, Vdt Castilla y Leon $57.99
"The 2004 Ramiro's was sourced from Toro and Ribera del Duero from 60- to 80-year-old Tempranillo vineyards. The wine was aged in new oak, 80% French and 20% American, for 30 months. Opaque purple/black in color, it exhibits an expressive bouquet with notes of toast, smoke, espresso, chocolate, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. This leads to an elegant yet densely packed wine with layers of flavor, light, silky tannin, spice and licorice elements, and a long, pure finish." WA94
2004 Rejadorada Spanish Red, Temple Tempranillo $20.99
2005 Rejadorada Spanish Red, Temple/ Toro $17.49
"Deep ruby. Brooding cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by cocoa and cola. Velvety cherry and dark berry preserve flavors are supported by firm tannins, which are slowly absorbed by the sweet fruit. Finishes with refreshing mineral bite and excellent persistence, strongly echoing the dark berry notes. This will benefit from a few years of patience." IWC90+
2003 Remirez De Ganuza Spanish Red, Reserva/ Tempranillo (Net) $43.97
"Inky violet. Coconutty oak and raspberry on the nose. Impressively deep, sweet red berry preserve flavors are framed by supple tannins and brightened by a zesty cracked pepper quality. Stains the palate, finishing sweet and with outstanding persistence. The hang time of this is pretty amazing." IWC93
1981 Rioja Alta, La Spanish Red, Gran Reserva "890" (Net) $239.97
"This winery's top of the line offerings are the Gran Reservas. The 1981 Gran Reserva 890 boasts a knock-out nose of smoke, charcoal, vanillin, black fruits, and cigar smoke. The wine's terrific fruit seemingly belies the relatively advanced medium ruby color with significant amber at the edge. There is tannin in the background, but the wine is broad and expansive, with considerable sweet fruit, glycerin, and length. 1981 was considered one of the great vintages for Rioja, and this wine is at its peak of maturity, although it will last for another 15-20 years." WA92
1985 Rioja Alta, La Spanish Red, Gran Reserva "904" (Net) $154.97
"This winery's top of the line offerings are the Gran Reservas. The 1985 Gran Reserva 904 exhibits a medium deep ruby color with considerable garnet and rust at the edge. The aromatics are extremely intense and compelling, offering up scents of plum-like fruit intermixed with smoke, minerals, tobacco, cherries, earth, and licorice. There is a sweet, rich impression on the palate, without any sense of heaviness or austere tannin. The wine is fresh and lively, but possesses the mature, sweet, smoky, Graves-like style of a top Rioja. Medium-bodied, beautifully concentrated and layered, as well as fully mature, it should keep for another decade. This is an exceptional example of an old school Spanish Rioja that was aged in different-sized oak vessels, and not released until it had reached full maturity. If readers think the price is high, consider the fact that this bodegas has aged the wine for the consumer, rather than asking you to buy it as a "future" in 1982 and hold it for 15 years before drinking it." WA90
1994 Rioja Alta, La Spanish Red, Gran Reserva 890/ Tempranillo $104.99
From the great and powerful 1994 vintage, this is a deep, rich, elegant and multilayered Rioja classic still in its youth. Although appealing now, it has only just begun its dramatic unfolding into the spectacular wine it will become. The 1989 edition has just hit that stride now and the 1994 is poised to surpass it. The following note is an excellent window on where the wine is at now, but not where it is going. ?Deep red. Dried strawberry and cherry on the nose, with suave oak spices, mocha, lavender, rose and cured meat aromas, plus an exotic hint of incense. Round and plush, with an insinuating sweetness to the red fruit flavors and gentle lift on the back end. The expanding fruit flavors are joined by exotic flowers, smoke and spices on the finish. -IWC 91

1987 Rioja Alta, La Spanish Red, Vina Arana/ Tempranillo Blend $86.99
1989 Rioja Alta, La Spanish Red, Vina Ardanza $86.99
"Medium red. Maturing Burgundy aromas of plum, dried cherry, loam and milk chocolate, plus a whiff of coconut. Big, rich and sweet, with huge palate presence; flavors of plum, bitter chocolate and coconut are given clarity by ripe, integrated acidity. Lovely sweet finishing flavors stain the palate. Very impressive." IWC93
2000 Rioja Alta, La Spanish Red, Vina Ardanza Reserva $28.99
"The 2000 Reserva Vina Ardanza has 25% Garnacha blended with the Tempranillo. Light to medium ruby, it delivers an enticing bouquet of cedar, spice box, leather, forest floor, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a ripe, moderately dense wine with complex flavors and excellent balance. Drink this tasty effort through 2015. La Rioja Alta continues to be one of the benchmarks for traditionally produced Rioja. What the wines may lack in power, they make up for in finesse and complexity." WA90
2005 Roda Spanish Red, Cirsion/ Tempranillo Blend (Net) $199.97
"The 2005 Cirison is 100% Tempranillo from hand-selected grapes. Purple-colored, it offers a splendid nose of acacia flowers, spice box, mineral, leather, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. 2008 Shaya Spanish White, Verdejo $11.49
This new project is a joint venture between Jorge Ordonez, Enrique Busto and the Gil family of Jumilla. The fruit is sourced from very old low yielding vines whose average age is between 75 and 112 years old. Rich but with enough vibrant acidity to lift it up, this lovely wine offers up hints of lime zest and orange blossom.
2005 Sierra Cantabria Spanish Red, Coll Privada/ Tempranillo (Net) $37.97
The nose of this modern expression of Rioja from Sierra Cantabria comes on with high toned black cherry fruit framed by powdered stone and accented with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and vanilla. On the palate well-focused macerated cherry and mouthwatering dried plum skin notes are bouyed by ultra-racy acidity. This is the greatest Colecci¢n Privada yet; a very sleek, sensual, and multi-layered Rioja star.
2005 Sierra Cantabria Spanish Red, Tempranillo (Net) $109.97
Another 2005 reaching incredible heights, even surpassing its outstanding 2004 predecessor (WA 97). The nose first offers beguiling black cherry and plum notes, then a rush of smokey cured meat tones that quickly mingle with the sweet and spicy fruit. These notes follow through onto the full and supple palate, which displays near-perfect ripeness. Excellent acidity rides into a very long and complex finish with distinct notes of dark cocoa, spiked with cherry liqueur. This is a very big wine that screams for a thick steak or a rack of lamb.

2007 Terras Gauda Spanish White, Rias Baixas/ Albarino (Net) $13.97
Abadia de San Campio is Terras Gauda's classic Albari¤o, and excellent in 2007. The nose features bright scents of lemon zest and fragrant hints of green apple skin. On the palate, it is crisp with vibrant peach, lime and mineral tones. Bright acidity carries it into a long finish. This medium-bodied white is superb with seafood dishes like steamed clams, delicately fried soft shell crab or sea bass in an herb jus.
2004 Terreus Spanish Red, Mauro $165.99
"This inky dark red is packed with ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit, framed by toast and chocolate oak flavors, and supported by muscular tannins. Yet this remains balanced, lively and even graceful. Drink now through 2014." WS93
2001 Tobia Rioja, Tempranillo/ Reserva $28.99
"The 2001 Oscar Tobia Reserva, from a great Rioja vintage, was in barrel for 18 months and offers additional complexity. There is plenty of toasty oak, earth, charcoal, and black cherry in the nose which is followed by a wine with all the material for several years of additional development." WA90
NV Toro Albala Other, Viejisimo Solera 1922 $39.99
2005 Torre De Golban Spanish Red, Ribera Del Duero $17.99
The moment you pour the Golban out of the bottle, you can tell you are in the presence of something dramatic. It's midnight in the glass, as the light is eaten up by the serious layers of black fruits, chewy tannins, and dark, semi-bitter chocolate. This rich combo is equally proportioned between the nose and the palate, and speaks to this wine's terrific balance between fruit, alcohol, and tannins. A wine with this much drama needs some serious food to tame its intensity. A nice, rare steak should fit the bill, or perhaps braised ribs. Pork driven tapas would also be an excellent choice.
2006 Torres Spanish Red, Celeste/ Tempranillo (Net) $17.97
"This red is harmonious, though a bit brooding, with dark flavors of coffee, anise and black plum backed by firm tannins. Mineral and smoke notes linger on the finish." WS90
2007 Torres Spanish Red, Sangre De Toro (Net) $7.99
2007 Torres Spanish Red, Sangre De Toro - 1.5L (1.5L) $14.99
2004 Traslanzas Spanish Red, Tinto Del Pais/ Tempranillo $39.99
2007 Tvronia Spanish White, Albarino/ Galicia $19.49
In the cooler part of northwest Spain directly on the Atlantic, in an area called Rias Baixas, Albari¤o reigns supreme. Thanks to the vineyard's proximity to the ocean and young Albari¤o's brilliant freshness and acidity, this is the wine to pair with almost any shellfish dish. It's just a touch tropical: stone fruit, pineapple and melon with a sliver of key lime. There's plenty of minerality to balance the fruit, but it's subtle, more of a summer rain then wet limestone and the palate is silky with a long finish.
2008 Txomin Etxaniz Spanish Red, Getariako Txakolin $17.99
2009 Ulacia Spanish White, Hondarribi Blend $15.49
Summer is not complete without Txakolina, the crisp, lightly petillant, wine from the Basque Country. Simple yet total refreshment is the name of the game with most Txakolina, but the Ulacia takes this liveliness to whole other level. Notes of lemon, tangy slate, and apples dance among the creamy bubbles created by the all natural fermentation. You simply can not go wrong with this wine except for not having any on hand when the guests show up. Next to fine Champagne, there's almost nothing we'd rather have for an aperatif than the Getariako. And as for seafood? It's a mind-blowing combo. When the earth leans towards the sun, we lean towards the Basque country and do as they do: Drink Txakolina every day! And at only 11% alcohol, why not?

2001 Valduero Spanish Red, Tempranillo $26.99
This Valduero Reserva is nothing short of an incredible discovery. When it first showed in 2004, it had been aged 'en barica' for 36 months and in the bottle for an additional three years, and was criticized for being over-oaked. As a result many snubbed their noses at it, and these bottles sat all alone for five more years in the distributor's temperature controlled warehouse, all but forgotten. Well, what do you think happened to that so-called 'oakiness'? It integrated, mellowed, and evolved. We now have a stellar, and we mean stellar, bottle of world-class Tempranillo. It's like it was aged just for us. We make discoveries like this, once, maybe twice a year, and it gives us just as much joy to drink it as it does to pass it on to you.
2004 Valduero Spanish Red, Tinto Reserva/ Tempranillo $26.99
We got lucky in 2009 and scored big on the 2001 vintage of the Valduero. We knew we had uncovered something special and we were both excited and nervous about their next release, which, because it's a Reserva (36 months in oak three years in bottle), was going to be the 04 vintage; a good, but not amazing year. We cracked the bottle, held our breath, and finally inhaled. Relief! All the smoky, spicy black tar and black fruit notes were there. But, we had to hold our breath again for the taste. Double relief! Yes, the 04 continues to rock our world, as it will yours. There's even a little more orange peel and cherry here than last time. Pure, rich, and intense.
2005 Vall Llach Spanish Red, Carignan Blend (Net) $78.97
"The flagship 2005 Vall-Llach is composed of 65% Carinena, 15% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Merlot aged for 12 months in new French oak. Many of the Carinena vines for this cuvee are pre-phylloxera. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up a splendid aromatic array including pain grille, slate, mushroom, espresso, garrigue, blueberry, and black currant." WA96+
2005 Vall Llach Spanish Red, Embruix (Net) $29.97
"Rich yet focused, this powerful red from Spain delivers plum, black cherry, anise, tobacco and sage flavors over muscular tannins. It's thick on the palate, yet dissolves to licorice, spice and flowers on the finish." WS93
2006 Valpiculata Spanish Red, Puertas Novas Toro $19.99
"Blackberry, cola and licorice flavors have a sweet allure in this fleshy red. Moderate tannins and acidity are well-balanced, and the finish is spicy and fresh. Drink now through 2012. 300 cases imported."
2008 Vega Murillo Spanish Red, Tinta De Toro $10.99
There's a sexy chocolate quality to this liquid hailing from Toro. And although its made from the "Bull's Grape" (Tinta de Toro), there's nothing stubborn about it. Instead, it's open, generous, and despite its light-ish body, it packs quite a punch. Sort of like lightweight boxer full of surprising, explosive power. Expect some berries and a hint of Tootsie Roll-minus the sugar-hidden in there as well. This is a great value wine.
1996 Vega Sicilia Spanish Red, Unico 96 (Net) $285.97
"The 1996 Unico seems more developed aromatically than the 1995 with elements of coffee and mocha but not quite the richness of fruit of the 1995. It is more supple on the palate but with less depth. It can be enjoyed now and over the next 20 years." WA95
NV Vega Sicilia Spanish Red, Unico Reserva Especial (Net) $365.97
1998 Vega Sicilia Spanish Red, Unico/ Tempranillo Blend (Net) $397.97
"The 1998 Unico is purple-colored with a complex bouquet of wood smoke, violets, Asian spices, mineral, blueberry, and assorted black fruits. This is followed by a full-bodied, dense, loaded wine with gobs of sweet fruit, great concentration, and layers of flavor. It will continue to evolve for another 5-7 years and drink well through 2040+." WA98
2001 Vega Sicilia Spanish Red, Valbuena (Net) $144.97
"The Valbuena offering is a brilliant introduction to the winery. The 2001 is especially good because all of the wine normally reserved for Unico went into this bottling. It has a similar personality to the 2002 but with more of everything as if it has been on an extended workout regimen. Youthful in appearance and with classic aromatics, it has the extract and the structure to blossom for 6-8 years and drink well for another 20." WA93
2003 Vega Sicilia Spanish Red, Valbuena (Net) $148.97
"The 2003 Valbuena is purple-colored and super-fragrant with aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, black currant, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a powerful, concentrated wine with an opulent palate-feel, layers of flavor, and beautiful integration of oak, tannin, and acidity..." WA94

2009 Venta Morales Spanish Red, Tempranillo/ La Mancha $5.99
2005 Vetus Spanish Red, Tempranillo/ Toro (Net) $13.97
"A polished surface gives way to a firm structure in this balanced red. Black cherry, bramble, smoke, mineral and floral notes interweave on the palate, lingering on the fresh finish. Subtle but complex." WS90

"The 2006 La Nieta (the granddaughter) is 100% Tempranillo from Finca La Nieta, planted in 1975. Malolactic fermentation was in new French barriques followed by 18 months in new French oak. Purple in color, it delivers a fragrant, alluring bouquet of roasted herbs, graphite, damp earth, incense, blueberry, and blackberry. Opulent, dense, and layered, this promising wine has tons of fruit, soft tannin, and superb length. It will benefit from 6-8 years of cellaring and offer prime drinking from 2016 to 2030." WA96
2005 Vinos De Arganza Spanish Red, Crianza Flavium Mencia $8.99
The Wine Advocate tried this incredible value and rated it 90 points, although no tasting note was given. We tried it and were wow'd. The richly fragrant nose features sweet cherry and earthy blackberry scents intertwined with notes of smoked cured meat and vanilla bean, plus hints of charcoal minerality and tobacco leaf. On the palate it is every bit as impressive. Juicy blackberry, plum and cherry flavors meld with rich iron, game and sage tones that lead into the long and spicy, vanilla and berry inflected finish. The medium to full body is well supported by an integrated spine of good acidity and ripe tannins which make this a great match with food, from charcuterie to herb roasted pork loin, roast beef or braised lamb. Superb for everyday drinking!

Drink it over the next three years." WA90
2005 Vinos De Terrunos Spanish Red, Mas Negre $30.99
"Inky ruby. Vibrant red berries and cherry on the nose, with white pepper and mineral qualities adding complexity. Tangy and focused, with racy redcurrant and wild strawberry flavors that grow sweeter with aeration. A subtle licorice note gains strength on the long, clinging finish. This suave wine already shows considerable complexity." IWC91
