Wine critic Robert M. Parker Jr. has called Giacosa's Roero Arneis "One of the most glorious dry whites made in Italy." The 2007 edition shows even more richness and expression than the excellent 2006, which we featured last year. The nose is very complex and giving, displaying juicy pear, peach and papaya scents which are interwoven with tones of jasmine, dried orange zest, minerals and honey, and just a hint of fresh hay. The palate features hard pear and orange zest flavors laced with minerals that merge into lightly honeyed white peach pit tones in the mid-palate and follow through onto the delicately spiced, floral finish. This wine is both highly elegant and refreshing. It drinks fabulously on its own as an ap‚ritif or will pair beautifully with poached fish in butter sauce, crab cakes or chicken paillard with lemon, olive oil and fresh herbs.
