2004 Galil Mountain Yiron Cabernet Blend The world of Kosher wine has come a long way in the last five years. The level of quality has dramatically risen, reflecting and even outpacing the viticultural and winemaking improvements generally found across in the wine world.

Whites

’06 Yarden “Mt. Hermon” White, Israel $9.99
This very aromatic white blend is well-integrated and makes for great quaffing. It has ample nectarine, peach and apricot notes bolstered by hints of papaya and lemony melon. Bright and lively it is perfect on its own or with seafood.

’06 Cantina Gabriele Pinot Grigio Italy Mevushal $10.99
This is a first class Pinot Grigio by any measure, featuring a very pretty nose of yellow apples and warm bees wax that leads into an ultra-drinkable palate. Pretty notes of nectarine and golden delicious apple mingle with pollen and a hint of minerality. There is very good persistence and intensity here, not often seen in Pinot Grigio at this price range.

’06 Goose Bay Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand Mevushal $17.99
This is a classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc displaying vibrant grapefruit and lemon notes plus hints of grass and gooseberry which accentuate the nose. The palate is rich and juicy, with more grapefruit tones plus hints of melon and mineral. Finishes with a crisp snap.

’05 Carmel “Ramat Arad” Sauvignon Blanc, Israel $18.99
Better than most of the Sauvignon Blanc out there. Honeydew melon, candied grapefruit, brioche and chalk tones grace the nose. On the elegant and polished palate silky green apple tones are layered with honeydew and complex minerality. This wine seems to get better and better on the very long finish. A wine to buy by the case.

’04 Yarden Chardonnay, Israel $14.99
This medium- to full-bodied Chardonnay offers citrus and tropical fruit notes backed by butter, vanilla and custard tones. It shows impressive depth and elegance on the palate and finishes with a splash of lemon zest. A superb medium weight go-to white.

’06 Hagafen “Oak Knoll” Chardonnay, California Mevushal $17.99
A great Chardonnay from one of California’s top Kosher producers. Pineapple and mango on the nose are laced with very clean and pretty vanilla bean aromas. On the palate the tropical fruit is very pure and evenly delineated with layered minerality. Balanced and long. Drink with rich seafood dishes or poultry.

’06 Domaine du Castel “Blanc du Castel” Chardonnay, Israel $42.99
A very pretty and serious Chardonnay. On the nose there is a beautiful and delicate display of fresh pear, white rose petal, nutmeg, white pepper and just a dash of cream. This very precise composition leads to a rich, layered palate with ripe pear, green apple, crushed stone and unsalted butter. The long finish offers hints of almond and toast. This complex and elegant wine shows superb proportionality and can be enjoyed with anything from sushi to herb roasted chicken.

Italian Reds

’05 Cantina Gabriele Chianti Mevushal $11.99
This Sangiovese is soft, highly drinkable and very affordable. It offers ripe cherry and leather notes on the nose plus a hint of Italian herbs. On the palate the cherry flavors are fat and expansive, accented by a touch of Tuscan earth. A real find.

Spanish Reds

’04 Elvi Wines “NESS” $15.99
A great value, Kosher or otherwise. The nose begins with ripe plum and spicy cassis through which myriad aromatic herbs flow. The palate is filled with juicy, vanilla-inflected black cherry and black raspberry, and backed by hints of elegant smoke. This wine has size and seamlessness, with a great chewy texture. A fantastic wine for the price.

’04 Elvi Wines “Makor” $17.99
This perennial favorite shows enticing red cherry notes on the nose that are supported by expressive bay leaf and thyme tones. On the palate there is great acidity that holds up vibrant pounded cherry pulp and red plum flavors. The wine is excellently balanced and the long finish rides out with soft hints of mint and plum.

’06 Celler de Capçanes “Peraj Petita” Montsant $17.99
This little brother of Peraj Ha’Abib is a great value. The nose delivers red and black raspberry notes and tones of wet stones drying in the sun. The palate carries its weight with ease, the glycerine and compact minerality adding depth to the juicy berry fruit. Rich, fruity and flavorful

’04 Celler de Capçanes “Peraj Ha’Abib” Montsant $47.97
This deep and concentrated red is one of our favorites in high-end Kosher wine. From the great 2004 vintage, it offers a plush nose blackberry and blueberry scents, butressed by mineral and rich vanilla tones. The palate is powerful, velvety and balanced with loads of black cherry, blackberry and dark plum fruit flavors, plus inky spice and oak notes. Finishes very long. A top vintage for one of the top Kosher wines.

French Reds

’06 Le Petit Chaban Bordeaux Mevushal $15.99
This entry level Bordeaux offers characteristic notes of cassis and black cherry plus earth, cedar and a touch of minerality. It is fresh and balanced in the mouth with more cherry notes that are accented by olive, earth and a touch of smoke. Very lively and affordable Bordeaux.

’02 Barons Rothschild Haut Médoc Bordeaux $24.99
This well-priced red is a long time Bordeaux standard and the 2002 edition is drinking very well now. It begins with ripe plum and cherry notes that are followed by graphite, leather and herb inflections. In the mouth it is elegantly firm but supple, and very expressive. Dark fruit notes are followed by fresh dug earth and spice, all leading up to a long finish. A classic.

’01 Château Giscours Margaux Bordeaux $72.99
This superb classified 2nd growth Margaux is drinking stunningly well right now. The nose is effusive with black currant and blackberry plus notes of pencil lead, tobacco and leather. The palate is suave and highly expressive, with loads of cassis and elegant notes of smoke, raspberry and minerality. This outstanding Bordeaux is a must for those seeking the very best in Kosher red wine.

Pinot Noir

’05 Tishbi “Estate” Pinot Noir, Israel $20.99
Strawberry and cranberry notes on the nose are wrapped in a gossamer of smoke and earth. The palate shows more delicate red fruit plus hints of earth and leather. Very good balance and elegance ride out into a long finish. Expressive and versatile.

’06 Hagafen “Estate” Pinot Noir, Napa Valley Mevushal $27.99
This excellent California-style Pinot Noir begins with notes of strawberry and hints of cherry and mint that are underpinned by tones of topsoil and brown clay. On the palate there is more focused red cherry that mingles with earth and crushed seashell tones. Rich and fruity.

Merlot

’05 Barkan “Classic” Merlot, Israel Mevushal $9.99
This appealing entry level Merlot features aromas of plum and cherry plus hints of tobacco on the nose. The palate is chewy and plump, offering ample fruit and supple structure. An excellent everyday Merlot.

’03 Tishbi Vineyards Merlot, Israel $17.99
This well-balanced Merlot displays plenty of perfectly ripe black currant aromas with minty, spicy accents. The currant flavors expand on the palate, broadening to include notes of cherry and leather. This well-structure red is smooth and harmonious, in the Tishbi style. A great moderately priced Merlot.

’04 Hagafen Merlot, Napa Valley Mevushal $24.99
This ripe Merlot displays a sensuous nose of black cherry and plum plus hints of autumn leaves. The palate shows good lushness and more supple, pliant cherry notes. This is a great wine to drink on its own or with mid-weight meat dishes.

Shiraz

’06 Dalton Shiraz $18.99
A bouquet of blackberry, plum and orange peel is backed by hints of cedar and licorice. The palate is surprisingly racy, the firm spine of acidity making this Shiraz highly drinkable and very food friendly.

Cabernet Sauvignon & Blends

’03 Weinstock Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Mevushal $9.99
Spot-on Cabernet varietal character. Pure cassis and stone plus a hint of tobacco leaf follow through onto the palate where they are joined by a touch of creamy mint. A medium- to full-bodied Cab, this is a great wine for everyday drinking.

’04 Tishbi “Estate” Cabernet Sauvignon, Israel $17.99

’04 Galil Mountain “Yiron” Cabernet Blend, Israel $20.99
This is one of the greatest Kosher finds out of the hundreds we’ve recently tried. The nose begins with ripe cassis but passes into licorice, asphalt and forest floor tones. On the palate it is polished and vibrant, with excellent acidity lifting rich, ripe black cherry and plum notes along with hints of underbrush and pine tar. Finishes with great depth and length. One of our favorites at any price.

204 Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon’04 Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon, Israel $22.99
If a nose could be chewy, this would be it. Blackberry, black cherry and cassis lead into beef boullion and briar tones. On the palate it is very accessible with copious fruit and pretty leather and cassis tones that echo on the long finish. Drink this with a thick steak.

’03 Ella Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Israel $27.99
Another outstanding find, this Cabernet offers very pure cassis scents that lead the way into notes of cranberry, vanilla, clay, and cedar. The palate is pure, plush and very juicy, with black cherry followed by hints of coffee and stone. The vanilla and mineral inflected finish shows plumpness. This is very expressive Cabernet Sauvignon.

’03 Herzog “Special Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Mevushal $32.99
This wine is both serious and highly drinkable. Cassis and spiced dark fruit open the well mannered nose. On the palate there is superb concentration of fruit, earth, and iron inflected minerality. Rich black cherry and cassis notes are backed by toasty vanilla and spice tones. Full-bodied and perfect with red meat fare.

’04 Tishbi “Jonathan Tishbi Special Reserve” Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot Blend $48.99
This is a seamless and expressive Cabernet Blend of outstanding quality. It is loaded with smoky black currant scents and mineral nuance. On the palate it is wonderfully silky with great depth, power and finesse. Juicy black currant and cherry flavors coat the tongue and are lined with deep iron and stone minerality. Additional nuances of boysenberry, creamy raspberry, tar and wintergreen ride out into the very long finish. Simply outstanding.

’05 Domaine du Castel “Grand Vin” Cabernet Sauvignon Blend, Israel $62.99
The very elegant nose of this sophisticated offering is dense with black cherry, soft oiled leather and hints of graphite and black olive. On the highly polished palate deep red and black currant flavors are joined by a touch of cream and hints of tobacco, graphite and spice. Powerful, pure and refined it finishes very long. Top class Cabernet Sauvignon.

’04 Carmel “Limited Edition” Cabernet Sauvignon, Israel $65.99
A very elegant, expressive and downright impressive bottle of wine. The nose shows crème de cassis, red and black cherry, leather and hints of fresh earth. On the palate there are expansive black fruit compote notes supported by a firm minerality and hints of toasty vanilla. The long finish echoes with meaty, earthy dark spiced fruit. A deep and complex knockout.

Moscato

’07 Carmel Moscato, Israel Mevushal $8.99
A very fresh and appealing Moscato with hints of lime and white pepper on the nose. The palate offers more lime along with nutmeg, spiced pear and fresh cut grass tones. Slightly sweet, lively and refreshing.

’07 Bartenura “Blue Bottle” Moscato, Italy Mevushal $10.99
This classic slightly sweet Moscato tosses up delicate notes of peach and apricot along with hints of lychee and mint. Very refreshing when chilled, this wine is slightly effervescent.

Dry Sparkling

’00 Yarden Blanc de Blanc Brut, Israel $17.99
This Kosher sparkler is a great way to begin or end a meal, festive or otherwise. On the nose and palate yellow apple, papaya and minerally bees wax conspire to make this wine supremely balanced sparkler ultra-drinkable.

Sweet Wines

NV Rashi “Claret” Red Blend, California $8.99
If you’re looking for something a moderately sweet and very easygoing, Rashi is it. Lots of juicy berry fruit from start to finish is supported by a smooth, velvety middle. Hints of spice add accent to this versatile semi-sweet red.

NV Cantina Gabriele “Vino” Sparkling Red Mevushal $7.99
Not too sweet, not too dry, this easy drinking red sparkler offers up notes of candied cherry with bright raspberry undertones. Fruity and very refreshing.

’07 Baron Herzog “Jeunesse” Cabernet Sauvignon Mevushal $9.97
For those of you looking to take your moderately-sweet wine-experience to the next level, here is the wine you’ve been looking for! Crushed cherry and blackberry notes meld with spiced leather in this semi-sweet quaffer. The palate is very chewy with more dark fruit tones. Goes great on its own or with a wide range of foods!

NV Cantina Gabriele “Red Basket” Sangiovese/Merlot Blend Mevushal $11.99
This semi-sweet red in a straw wrapped Chianti bottle is the perfect sipper to sit back and relax with. Notes of ripe red cherry and a hint of leather are ample on both the nose and palate. Fruity, balanced and delicious.
