The palate is a rich silky expression of blueberries, orange peel, a dash of white pepper and smoked meats. The tannins on the lingering finish are perfectly melded to the wine's soft yet rustic acidity.

Château Grand Cassagne always produces excellent wines that are also great values, and their rosé has been a summer staple for the PJ's staff. Strawberry, raspberry and bright candy apple dominate the nose. The palate is vibrant with the clean tart fruit flavors of apple and red currant. The wine finishes with a great balance between acidity and the slightest suggestion of silken tannins.

“Good ruby-red. Reduced nose initially dominated by chocolate, gunflint, licorice and spices, with black cherry emerging with aeration. Then juicy and tight, less broad than the Rue de Vergy but with more inner-mouth lift and definition. Unevolved on the back end too, but the building tannins are broad and ripe. Lignier combines three parcels of vines that are 47, 50 and 60 years of age.” IWC (88-91)

“Medium ruby-red. Briary black cherry, licorice and a suggestion of mentholatum on the nose. Hard to taste today owing to the level of CO2, but this is concentrated and sappy, with flavors of kirsch and crushed stone. Firm acids contribute to the impression of backbone. Strong but youthfully austere, and long on the aftertaste. Very 2005 in character and built to age.” IWC (90-92)

This power-packed red is cut in an Aussie inspired style. It is very deeply colored and offers an expansive nose of deep black cherry and herbs de Provence, followed by vanilla bean, mocha, rich oak and saddle leather notes. The palate is full and plush with ultra-ripe blackberry, black cherry and red berry fruit flavors, accented by notes of coffee, toasty vanilla, garrigue and dried plum. This big, flavor-packed wine offers a wild herb inflected French twist on New World power.

Intense and highly aromatic notes of hard pear and pulverized stone, with a just a touch of hay and white flower on the nose. The palate exhibits tremendous firmness from both minerals and ample yet integrated acidity. It is full of fruit, particularly pear, apple, and nectarine, and finishes very long and stoney. A very serious wine. Once you taste it you will conclude it's a bargain.

Raffault's unique Chinon Rose is made by the saigne method. It shows bright and lively wild strawberry and raspberry fruit backed by fresh red grapefruit and stone on the nose. The palate has more of the same, plus a dense core of mineraity and an elegant mouthfeel. The finish is long, succulent, and rich with minerals. This is a very versatile wine that drinks well on its own, or is simply perfect with picnic charcuterie, goat cheese, fish, and fowl in aspic.

“Pale red with a brick rim. Rose, redcurrant and dried strawberry on the nose, along with a hint of white pepper. Light and delicate in texture, almost ethereal in its red fruit presentation. Silky, almost gossamer in texture and weight, with precise red berry and pomegranate flavors and no obvious tannins. If you looked at this funny, it might disintegrate. Definitely for fans of the type, and I hope that their bottles are in as good condition as mine was.” IWC 90
96 López de Heredia Viña Gravonia Rioja Crianza White $18.97
A classic wine from one of (if not) the most traditional producers in Spain. The nose is laced with warm wax, pollen, soft apple, and mineral. The palate follows through with more apple, wax, and mineral, adding preserved lemon, nut, and a hint of honeysuckle. With fantastic acidity and near perfect balance, this wine still has many years of life left in it.

Made from 80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, 5% Graciano grapes picked from the Cenicero and Sonsierra vineyards. Aged for a minimum of 3 years, both in oak casks and in the bottle before being released. A wine with that unmistakable Rioja personality. Deep cherry red color with well defined, supremely balanced aromas of wood, red cherry, plum, cedar and sweet mineral spice. Full bodied and silky on the palate with soft, polished tannins and a long finish. Very elegant.

“The 2004 Semele is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Merlot aged for 12 months in used French and American oak. This purple-colored wine has a fragrant bouquet of cedar, spice box, blueberry, and blackberry which jumps from the glass. Medium-bodied with some elegance, it has a streamlined style with ample fruit, good acidity, and ripe tannin, all of which are nicely balanced. This well-made wine should continue to evolve for 2-3 years and drink well for a decade. It is also an excellent value.” WA 89
