02 Mischief & Mayhem Beaune Premier Cru Clos du Roy Red $31.99
It is rare to find Premiere Cru Burgundy from a great vintage at this kind of price. And to top it off this very small production Beaune (only 900 bottles!) is drinking beautifully now. The bouquet is a complex crush of red cherry and damp earth, with cranberry, nutmeg, dry mint leaf and tobacco notes. It offers the hearty structure characteristic of Beaune, excellent ripeness, vivid acidity and a rich, silky mouthfeel. The attack shows loads of juicy red berry fruit and unfolds into distinctive layers of earth, chalk and white pepper spice. The tannins are ripe, polished and full, and carry into a substantial, harmonious finish of Bing cherry notes and soft earth tones. 03 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco $23.99
“Readers should make a point to should check out the estates 2003 Barbaresco as this years release is off the charts. The single-vineyard Riservas will not be produced in 2003 and this wine clearly benefits from the addition of that fruit. It is an unusually rich and expansive wine for this estate, packed with heady sensations of spices, licorice and menthol that are followed by deep layers of super-ripe fruit that fill out the wines frame with excellent concentration and fleshiness, closing with beautifully well-integrated tannins that are the exception rather than the rule in 2003. Atypically large-scaled and ample for a Barbaresco from this estate, it is also the finest normale the winery has released in many a year.” WA 91

03 Izadi Rioja Crianza Red $9.99
Earlier this year, we sold through the remarkable 2003 Puerta Vieja Crianza, an incredible value in the high finesse, traditional Rioja style. Sumptuous and complex, it boasts a delicious bouquet of cherry and cassis, with notes of smoky oak and nuances of tobacco, tar, black pepper and cedar. In the mouth, this wine is rich with notes of black plum and blackberry on the front palate. Blueberry flavors emerge on the mid palate along with cedar spice notes. This wine pairs excellently with summer fair like hot dogs, grilled chicken, burgers or lamb chops; in cooler seasons with braised or smoked meats that just fall off of the bone, rabbit stew or roast lamb or beef. It should be cellared for another 6-8 years followed by a drinking window of 15-20 years. Denser and more powerful than the '90, with noteworthy structure, but still quite closed. Distinct chocolate flavor in the mouth. Finishes with substantial tongue-clenching tannins.” IWC 88(+?)
