As most Pinot Noir lovers know, it is difficult to get a really great one at an everyday price - yet here one is. Distinctively French, this rustic Pinot Noir shows notes of dried strawberries and winter spice. As lovely as it is right now, it can be aged from 3 to 5 years. Enjoy with almost any food you like - this is a very food friendly wine.

’06 Courtois, Claude “Quartz” Sauvignon Blanc $23.99
A PJ's Staff Pick by Dan: The '06 Quartz, much like the '03, is difficult to pin down at first, but once you spend some time with it you'll fall in love. On the nose sliced apple is joined by poached apple and pear as well as apple chutney spiced with brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice. On the palate the wine is very nutty, with a firm acidity. More apple is joined by almond, hazelnut and wild yeast notes plus hints of bacon fat and warm caramel. The wine finishes long and vibrant, with great mineral and core fruit presence and a lingering inner mouth perfume of pear eau du vie. Yes, it works great with goat cheese, but it's also fantastic with boiled or grilled sausage.

’07 Domaine de la Pepierè Muscadet Sèvre et Maine $11.99
This fantastic Muscadet has a nose centered on creamy pear and copious minerals to which scents of crushed almond adds depth. On the plate the wine shows great vibrancy and juiciness, with a firm and racy spine of mineral and acidity carries hard pear, lemon drop, and creamy almond flavors through the long and zesty finish. This wine screams for shellfish, so drink with oysters on the half shell, linguine with white clams or moules frites.

’07 Domaine Guillot-Broux “Les Combettes ” Macon Chardonnay $19.99
The nose opens with expansive aromas of crushed oyster shell and wet stone wrought with juicy lemon zest and Granny Smith apple flesh. The palate is steely and focused — not austere in the least — with superbly vibrant and integrated acidity. The wine finishes long, with echoing seashell and pit fruit tones. This is a rich and full-bodied gem and as it matures in bottle, it will take on ample overtones of dried fruit (apricots, figs, mango papaya) and freshly baked brioche, and will be is a wonderful accompaniment to grilled fish, roast pork loin, foie gras and roast chicken. The crisp, mineral driven character of this wine in it's relative youth, as in this spring and summer, makes it a perfect match with seafood, such as oysters on the half-shell, steamed lobster drenched in butter and grilled shrimp.

’06 Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes Cotes du Py Red, Morgon $23.99

’05 Galantin Bandol $18.99
Bandol is a full-fleshed, sturdy wine known for its aging potential. So, when I saw the '05 vintage date on the bottle of Le Galantin I expected the wine I was about to drink would need some time in cellar. And while a few years in cellar might reward the patient consumer, this wine is rich, luscious and remarkably approachable right now. A whiff of barnyard, leather, coffee, blueberries and blackberries appear on the nose. Those same dark berries reappear on the palate alongside notes of coffee and dark chocolate, all framed by very good acidity and firm, round tannins.

’06 Goisot Sauvignon de Saint-Bris White $18.99
The nose provides delicate floral notes, melded beautifully to broad notes subtle tones of pulverized stone and a dazzling suggestion of honeysuckle blossom. On the palate, lemony flavors are inflected with chalky minerality. Deft notes of sweet summer melon elegantly build through the mid-palate. Vibrant terroir driven acidity provides backbone and carries into a long, nuanced finish. Ideal with rabbit terrine, fois gras spread on good country bread, grilled shrimp, pork loin in a cream sauce and soft ripened cheeses.

Faint floral notes on the nose lend themselves beautifully to subtle notes of warm minerality and light honeysuckle blossoms. Lemon inflected chalky minerality and deft notes of melon backed by vibrant acidity. Ideal with pork loin in a cream and lentil sauce, shellfish, grilled shrimp, lobster, and soft ripened cheeses.

Marcillet

’07 Marcillet Bourgogne Aligote $11.99
Light straw colored in the glass with an almost transparent edge around the rim of the glass. Inviting scents of white stone fruits, pulverized mineral notes and a hint of wet stones grace the richly expressive nose. The palate is a delectable expression of white fruits, ripe melon flesh and a hint of citrus zest. This white has great natural acidity that really sets off the green apple and creamy white peach quality on the finish. This gem is light enough to enjoy by itself and packs more than enough elegance to serve with grilled river fish, seared scallops and even roast chicken.

’07 Michel Bailly & Fils “Les Loges” Pouilly-Fumè White $18.99
The 2007 Bailly “Les Loges” is a richly perfumed wine with a seductive nose of honeysuckle and tropical fruit revealing from the start that this is not an austere herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc. On the palate the wine is fruit forward with flavors of figs, nectarines and peaches kept fresh by notes of citrus peel and nuances of minerals. The wine also displays ample acidity making it crisp and bright. The finish is delicate but lingering. This classic Loire Sauvignon will easily set the stage for a perfect fall evening relaxing in front of a warm fire….even better with cheese fondue and crusty French bread.

NV Renardat-Fache “Methode Ancestrale” Cerdon de Bugey Semi-Sweet Rosé Sparkling Wine $17.97
This lightly sweet, sparkling pink gem from the picturesque French Alps is made from organic Gamay and Poulsard grapes using the m‚thode ancestrale. Unlike the m‚thode champenoise or carbonation method, here the grapes are fermented in chilled vats until the alcohol reaches about 6%. After a light filtration that leaves most of the active yeast in the unfinished wine, it is bottled and continues fermenting, stopping at about 7 1/2% - 8% alcohol, retaining perceptible sweetness from the grapes. This is a customer and staff favorite with its mouthwatering bouquet of strawberry jam and blueberry compote. The body is a delectable expression of strawberry, pretty rose hip and a touch of blushing peach. Perfect as an aperitif or with red velvet cake.

’08 Pascal Jolivet “Attitude” VdP Loire Sauvignon Blanc $13.99
A Loire classic in affordable, fresh and racy Sauvignon Blanc.

’08 Pascal Jolivet Sancerre $18.97
This Sauvignon Blanc possesses a pretty straw color in the glass with radiant silver highlights. Lemon, grapefruit, gooseberry and sweetened mineral notes all fall graciously into place on this expressive nose. The palate boasts a bright, yet reserved citrus complexity that is hugging a huge mineral profile. It shows both impressive depth and lovely textural creaminess. Enjoy with a hearty garden salad, a creamy Valency spread on a warm slice of rustic bread, grilled salmon over fresh sorrel or chicken breast and asparagus over fresh pasta

An elegant and quenching Riesling, the nose of the ’07 Classique begins with peach blossom scents that move into spiced ripe peach aromas accented with hints of white flowers, white pepper and crushed stone. On the palate the wine is elegant yet zesty. Peach pit and green apple notes mingle with mineral and floral tones which carry through onto the stony, pit fruit inflected finish. Drink this with a Cobb salad, fried white fish, or porkchops with herb butter.

’07 Paul Blanck “Classique” Gewürztraminer $24.99
As you might expect, the nose of this elegant Gewürz is highly aromatic. Classic scents of lychee, white flower blossoms and peach mingle with delicate hints of sandalwood and lavender. On the palate the wine shows a well-modulated richness which it carries beautifully via streamlined acidity. White peach and spice flavors spread across the tongue and lychee and sandalwood hints linger on the long finish. Try this with Chinese take-out or your own ginger and scallion chicken stir fry. It also works wonderfully with fried calamari, white sausages with mustard or Wiener schnitzel.

Le Temps de Cerices

Axel Prüfer Le Temps des Cerise “Un Pas de Côté” “2007” $25.99
The nose of this biodynamic marvel begins with scents of violet and lavender which are wrapped around a core of red cherry and raspberry and accented by hints of wild yeast and ash. In the mouth the wine shows vibrant acidity which enlivens very pure flavors of red cherry and fresh crushed blackberry. This juicy primary fruit is joined by tones of warm wet leather and a touch of game, and wine finishes very long, with lingering baking spice, ash and black and red berry nuances. Drink this with an herb roasted Cornish game hen, quail with a wild berry reduction, or duck leg confit.

’07 Souhaut St. Joseph $34.97
This excellent Saint Joseph virtually explodes with spice on the nose. Nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon and coriander all make a showing, as does red cherry, orange, and rare beef. On the palate the wine is complex and superbly proportioned. Concentrated cherry and orange flavors glide over the palate supported by a firm spine of acidity and mineral and accented by dry ground leather, saline, coco powder and iron. The finish is long and laced with spice and mineral. Drink this with red meat, particularly lamb chops, hanger steak, or try it with more gamy selections like pheasant or venison.

NV Vilmart Champagne $54.97
“Silver-straw. Pungent apple, pear and nut aromas; in a yeasty, lightly oxidative style strikingly reminiscent of a sous voile wine from the Jura. Deep and rich, with powerful apple, pear and walnut skin flavors and a refreshing, almost salty mineral tang. Drink this singular, wild Champagne with full-flavored or washed-rind cheeses, or even blues.” IWC91

Germany

’08 Schloss Mühlenhof Rheinhessen Trocken Dornfelder 1.0L $8.49
Cherry red in the glass with scents of creosote, cherry preserves spread on whole wheat toast and baked apples. The palate is redolent with zesty cherry fruit, sweet plums and more than a suggestion of candied blackberries. Don't let the "Trocken" on the label mislead you, as there is plenty of pretty fruit flavors in this organic liter-sized stunner. I highly recommend serving this for Thanksgiving dinner as it will hold up to the turkey and all the traditional trappings.

Italy

’07 Villa Sparina Gavi di Gavi Cortese $17.49
Dark straw in the glass with shimmering silver and gold highlights. The nose is redolent with fresh thyme, beeswax, wet stones and a field of hay drying beneath the summer sun. The palate is creamy with suggestive white stone fruit flavors and sweet herbs that are backed by silken mineral notes and a touch of beautifully intergrated acidity. This Gavi is a pleasure to drink and it ideal with grilled or baked fish dishes, chicken or shrimp pasta dishes, light young sheep's and goat's milk cheeses or simply by itself.

’06 Badia a Coltibuono  Chianti Classico $23.99

’06 Cascina Tavijn  Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato $22.99
Look up "beautiful young wine" in the dictionary and there should be a picture of Cascina Tavijn's Ruch‚ printed there. The nose is amazingly expressive and in fact very brachetto-like with a panoply of pure floral notes, including rose and pollen-dusted violet that are supported by some of the purest black raspberry and blackberry notes that we've had in a very long time. This gorgeous fruit follows through on the palate where it picks up deep mineral tones and hints of soil. The proportion of this wine is stunning, reminiscent of that of a 1er Cru level Burgundy. It carries its fruit seamlessly on a lithe spine of acidity and is young, fresh and elegant. This is the hills of Asti in a glass.
