Susana Balbo Malbec ’08 Crios De Susana Balbo Mendoza Torrontes $12.99
“This brilliant portfolio begins with the medium straw-colored 2008 Torrontes. It offers up an alluring perfume of spring flowers, peach, apricot, and a hint of citrus. On the palate the wine is dry, smooth textured, layered, and succulent while retaining a sense of elegance. This nicely balanced wine features a lengthy, fruit-filled finish…Susana Balbo is also widely credited with developing the modern style of Torrontes; hers remains the benchmark.”– WA 90

’08 Crios De Susana Balbo Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon $12.99

’08 Crios De Susana Balbo Mendoza Malbec $12.99
The ’08 Crios Malbec opens with bright blackberry notes which are accented by fig tones and a hint of violet and field flowers. On the palate the wine is medium to full bodied, and one can expect it to pick up weight in the near term. Crush blackberry and black cherry flavors are complemented by black licorice and a hint of creamy mineral. The finish shows good length and echoes of fruit and spice. Drink this with full flavored dishes, from hamburgers and ribs to marinated flank steak.

Australia

Deep purple and ruby around the rim of the glass, this buoyant and fruit-laden Shiraz offers a fragrant array of blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, black pepper and licorice aromatics. Full-bodied, juicy and round on the palate, this well-balanced Shiraz delivers ample amounts of fleshy red and black fruits flavors that are backed by zesty acidity and easy-going tannins. Rich, harmonious and long, this well-priced Barossa Valley Shiraz is well worth trying.

’08 Les Vignerons d'Estezargues “From the Tank” Rosé 3.0L $32.99
This 3 liter bag in the box - that's 4 750 ml bottles - is in a class by itself, and has been praised by Oprah and is currently being served at Daniel Boulud's latest effort DBGB. Made from 100% Cinsault this unique rose is from the only organic coop in France! The nose carries loads of fresh citrus fruit overtones and a dusting of garrigue infused terroir. The palate is coated with buoyant raspberry and red currant fruit on the first sip while orange peel and pip emerge on the middle palate. The finish is mineral-drenched and succulent. I highly recommend serving this summer stunner with grilled shrimp or scallops; it also works really well with barbequed chicken. Keep a box in the fridge, as it stays fresh for weeks once it is opened, and enjoy a glass or two after work in the evening, it's a great way to beat the heat and oppressive humidity and it will help keep your A/C bill down as well.

’06 Franck Peillot “Altesse de Montagnieu” VDQS Roussette de Bugey $21.99
Peillot's '06 Altesse de Montagnieu has a ripe, expressive nose of dried apricots, tangerine and green apple joined with light floral notes and a crushed stone minerality. These notes join again on the juicy palate, enlivened by the crisp, bracing acidity of a fresh picked apple.

’98 La Bastide Blanche “La Bandol” Mourvedre Blend $39.99
This garrigue-packed library release is deep, rich and just coming into its own. The nose is wildly fragrant with black plum, blackberry and chalky scrub brush tones of sage, rosemary and dusty, stone covered earth. The palate is broad, bright and chewey displaying a core of plum and blackberry flavors with spice and chalk coated stone notes. With surprising finesse, the middle fattens in the glass revealing ever more complex wild herb tones over a spine of fresh, ripe tannins. Decant to serve this robust and earthy red now or hold for another decade.

’06 Domaine Mathieu “Cuvée Châteaumar” Côtes du Rhône $10.99
The nose of this outstanding Côtes du Rhône is exceptionally pure and well delineated. Vibrant crushed blackberry scents share the scene with tones of earth and black coffee, hints of warm crushed stone, and just the slightest whiff of smoke. On the palate the wine is very clean with superb acidity. Flavors of juicy blackberry and ripe raspberry build from the attack to mid-palate and finish, and building with them is a wave of creamy mineral that reaches remarkable intensity on the back palate. The finish is long and bright, accented by coffee and berry tones. This is an impressive bargain.

’06 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer $23.99
“There's good vibrancy to the acidity in this dry, tangy version, with lots of grapefruit and citrus peel up front. Finishes with the floral and white pepper notes typical of the variety. Drink now through 2012.”– WS88

’08 Estezargues “Grandes Vignes” Cotes-du-Rhone $10.99
This affordable old vine Rhône red packs elegant notes of smoky red fruits, violet, herbs and a hint of dark chocolate on its lovely nose. The palate is rich with ripe cherry and berry flavors, mineral notes, supple acidity and soft tannins. This organic gem pairs beautifully with barbecued chicken, ham, grilled pork, braised lamb shoulder or hearty beef stews.

’06 Nicolas Potel “Vieilles Vignes” Vosne-Romanèe Red $58.99

’06 Nicolas Potel Echézeaux Grand Cru Echézeaux Red $166.99

’06 Nicolas Potel Savigny-Lès-Beaune Premier Cru Hauts Jarrons Red $45.99
Made from Potel’s own vines, the Haut Jarrons shows ample black cherry, blackberry and plum aromas on the nose, accented by hints of black coffee and crushed rocks. On the palate the wine is quite supple and inviting, with admirable balance and concentration. Cherry and berry flavors mingle with iron and a hint of beef, carrying through to the polished and persistent finish.

’06 Nicolas Potel Vougeot Grand Cru Clos-de-Vougeot Red $166.99

’06 Peillot, Franck French Other, Altesse Montagnieu Bugey $21.99
Peillot's '06 Altesse de Montagnieu has a ripe, expressive nose of dried apricots, tangerine and green apple joined with light floral notes and a crushed stone minerality. These notes join again on the juicy palate, enlivened by the crisp, bracing acidity of a fresh picked apple.

’07 Terres Doreès “Chardonnay Beaujolais Blanc” Beaujolais White $13.99
“The Terres Dorees 2007 Beaujolais Blanc Chardonnay displays a gorgeous aroma of diverse flowers, white peach, lime, grapefruit, and ocean breeze. There is positively chewy substance on the palate, yet the wine remains refreshing and lilting in personality. The chalky, leesy sense of extract is palpable, yet floral nuances and delicate peach and lime fruit positively soar into the finish, along with savory, saline, sweet, scallop-like notes. This beauty is more reminiscent of a fine Chablis or even Riesling than of a Chardonnay from the Macon or Cote d'Or. A revelatory example of what is possible in this appellation and vintage, you can enjoy the Brun 2007 Blanc over at least the next 2-3 years. (And should you run into any remaining bottles of the 2006, buy them, too!) The prevalence of chalky soils in the south of Beaujolais is the principle reason why this area is classified merely as "Beaujolais" rather than "Beaujolais-Villages." But it is also a reason why Chardonnay can achieve outstanding results here, even if there are few examples (even fewer of which carry the "Beaujolais Blanc" rather than "Bourgogne" appellation). Jean-Paul Brun's is not just a too little-known treasure of Beaujolais, it is among the handful of consistently finest value Chardonnays on the planet.”– 91 WA

Germany

’07 Latitude 50 Spatburgunder Brut Rosé $18.99

’07 Latitude 50 Pinot Noir $10.99

’07 Schloss Muhlenhoff Muller-Thurgau Trocken $10.99
This is a steal in dry German whites. The nose is super fragrant with white flower, orange, tangerine and nectarine tones. The palate is bright, crisp and packed with the same flavors as found on the nose. The finish clean and full with lingering notes of orange. An outstanding value.

Italy

Librandi ’05 Librandi Duca Sanfelice $15.99
The ’05 Duca Sanfelice Riserva is a Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchiere winner and an outstanding find at this price. It offers up a delightful nose of warm spice box, dried cherry and plum. Juicy blackberry and ripe plum flavors dominate the palate and are backed by earthy hints of cocoa and a dusting of rust coated ore. This red has excellent texture with supple, ripe tannins that mark the chewy finish. Rich and well-balanced, the Duca Sanfelice is a great choice to pair with spicy pasta dishes, roasted goat or lamb, or roasted red meats.

’04 Montevetrano IGT Colli di Salerno Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Aglianico Blend $85.99

’06 Seghesio Barbera $16.99
“Bright, full ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry, blueberry and bitter chocolate. Rich, deep and rather powerful (14.5% alcohol), with superb sweetness to its strong fruit. A major mouthful of sweet, ripe barbera but with enough acidity to give life to its lush texture.” – 91 IWC

’03 Fonseca LBV Porto Douro Blend $17.97

NV Fonseca Tawny Port 20 Years $40.97

’00 Fonseca Vintage Port .750ml $74.97
“Dense ruby/purple-colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scaled, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible...” –WA95

’07 Finca Torremilanos “Monte Castrillo” Ribera Del Duero $10.49
Dark cherry in the glass. Scents of oak are in perfect harmony with the cherry and ultra-ripe strawberry passing into cool notes of vanilla. The palate delivers the same flavors as found on the nose; here they are backed by silken tannins and framed by a judicious touch of oak. Serve this with grilled meats and hearty winter stews.

’99 Callejo Spanish Red, Gran Reserva $64.99
“The 1999 Gran Reserva comes from the estate's vines of over 60 years of age. It spent 24 months in French and American oak. The barrel notes are prominent in the aromatics along with mineral, earth, leather, and blackberry elements. The wine becomes a bit lean on the mid-palate and the finish although the flavors are attractive. Drink it over the next 4-6 years. The Callejo family owns 60 hectares of low yielding Tempranillo vines (Tinto Fino as it is known in Ribera del Duero) ranging in age from 25-70 years. All of the following wines are 100% Tempranillo from estate vineyards and were fermented with native yeasts.”– 90 WA

’03 Callejo Spanish Red, Seleccion Familia - 1.5L $239.99
“Last but not least is the magnificent 2003 Felix Callejo Family Reserve. It is 100% Tempranillo aged 15 months in French oak in contact with the lees. In appearance it is a thick opaque purple and the fermentation with native yeasts has given it a kinky, wild blueberry and blackberry nose along with creme de cassis reminiscent of Napa's Colgin Cabernet. There is beautiful fruit, impressive purity and lots of complexity in this intellectually as well as hedonistically-styled effort. Give it 4-6 years of cellaring and drink if for another 20+.”– 98 WA

’04 Callejo Spanish Red, Seleccion Familia $99.99
“This assertive red shows a powerful, angular structure, with muscular tannins, dark flavors of licorice, toast, tobacco and mineral and a characteristic gamy note. Takes no prisoners.”– WS93

’04 Dehesa de Cadozos Spanish Red, Tinto Tempranillo $43.99

’06 Mas Que Vinos Ercavio Roble $10.97

Merum ’06 Merum Monastrell $7.99

’05 Odfjell “Orzada” Maipo Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend $16.99

’03 Pago de los Capellanes “Orzada” Maipo Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend $81.97
“A plush texture carries real concentration in this dense red. The flavors are muted now, but black cherry, blackberry, floral, chocolate and mineral notes will bloom with time. Shows the mineral and light gamy notes typical of the region.”– WS95

’05 Vila Viniteca Paisajes V $36.99
“The 2005 Paisajes V is 40% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha, 10% Graciano, and 10% Mazuelo aged for 14 months in new Allier barrels. It delivers a classic perfume of pain grille, mineral, cassis, and blackberry. Well-delineated on the palate, it is rich and layered with gobs of sweet fruit already beginning to exhibit complexity.”– WA94

’01 Vina Santurnia Rioja Reserva $17.99

’03 Xestal Mencia Bierzo $28.99
“The 2003 Xestal is 100% Mencia from 60+-year-old bush vines and aged for 12 months in French oak before being bottled unfiltered. Dark ruby-colored, it offers a lovely bouquet of violets, mineral, pencil lead, spice box, black cherry, and black raspberry. Elegant, harmonious, sweet, and balanced on the palate, with ample silky fruit, this tasty effort has a 60-second finish.”– WA93

’07 Beckmen “Cuvee Le Bec” $15.99
An excellent source of high quality as well as value-priced Rhone Rangers, Beckmen produces one of the wine world-s finest bargains, the Cuvee Le Bec, a blend of Rhone varietals. The 2006 consists of 50% Grenache, 28% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre and Counoise. It is medium-bodied and soft with plenty of pepper, sweet cherry, herb, and spice characteristics. An ideal bistro red, it is a delici ous, personality-filled, bargain-priced effort to enjoy over the next 1-2 years

’06 Chappellet Chardonnay $26.99
“A rich, creamy, yet elegant wine, with a seamless mix of ripe pear, apple and creamy, toasty oak flavors that provide a nice balance between fruit and oak. Has a long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2012.”– 92 WS

’06 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee $19.97
Complex spice aromas and concentrated sweet fruit abound in this wine. The aromas entice with blackberry and ripe plum mingling with clove and vanilla. The mouth is alive with berries, cherries and spicy oak. Smooth and full, this approachable wine offers a long, lingering finish.

’06 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon “Prichard Hill” $125.97

It offers a mouthful of juicy and supple dark cherry and cranberry fruits complemented by notes of smoke and black pepper.

Ridge Lytton Springs ’07 Deloach Pinot Noir “Russian River Valley"  $21.99

’03 Etude  Napa Cabernet $65.97
“The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon is even more forward than the 2004, with a plump, heady, corpulent mouthfeel and loads of cassis, licorice, and pain grille notes and a hint of graphite. Deep, full-bodied, chewy, and supple-textured, this wine should drink well for 14 or so years.”– WA91

’06 Justin Cabernet Sauvignon $19.97
An outstanding edition of this longtime favorite. Really showing it's stuff in 2006. Deep, supple, juicy and very long on the palate. Excellent California Cabernet at a modest price.

’06 Justin Syrah $22.99

’05 L'Aventure “Optimus” Paso Robles Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon $34.97
The least expensive red wine is the Optimus cuvee. The 2005 Optimus (51% Syrah, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot) barely qualifies as a Rhone Ranger, but it offers classic chocolate, cassis, espresso, and subtle wood notes along with a dense ruby/purple hue, gorgeous concentration, and plenty of spice, cedar, and a Pauillac-like complexity and richness. This serious effort is more French than Californian." WA94

’07 Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon $10.97
The 2006 Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon displays upfront aromas of ripe red fruit and hints of vanillin, followed by similar vibrant red berry flavors. Solid tannins lend excellent structure, while maintaining a soft approachability reflective of Paso Robles Cabernets. The wine has a ripe, full finish. Its fruit-driven style lends ease to food pairing: a good choice for grilled, braised or roasted meats, Mediterranean fare and semi-aged cheeses.

’06 Liberty School Chardonnay, Central Coast $9.97
Deep inflections of butterscotch, golden apple skins and spice notes on the nose. The palate is a rich expression of bright white fruit balanced by moderate acidity and framed by gentle oak. This is a stellar Chardonnay at an unbeatable price.

’07 Liberty School Syrah, Central Coast $10.97
An incredible bargain, Liberty School's 2005 Syrah just seems to keep on giving. Plum, blackberry and orange peel are backed by iron and roasted meat tones. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied with plush tannin and excellent structure. More orange, blackberry, meat and mineral notes are supported by bright acidity not usually found in California Syrah, never mind California Syrah at this price range. Very drinkable.

’06 Ridge Geyserville $29.97
“Just like the tasty Sonoma field-style blends of yore, with distinct toasty dill and berry cobbler aromas and zesty raspberry, cracked pepper and earthy sage flavors that end with slightly rustic tannins. Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Mataro. Drink now through 2015. ”– 90 WS

Ridge Lytton Springs ’06 Ridge Lytton Springs $29.97
The rich and deeply structured '06 Lytton Springs is a blend of 80% Zinfandel, 16% Petite Syrah and 4% Carignan. On the nose the terroir of Lytton Springs announces itself immediately. Plum and mountain berry fruit aromas are joined by hints of fresh coffee, asphalt and undertones of spice. In the mouth the wine is dense, expansive and layered with fruit. Red cherry and black plum flavors stand toe to toe with notes of garrigue, baking spices, and fresh turned earth, over which touches of field flowers and road toar hover and follow through onto the long finish. It is still youthfully tight, so decant it to enjoy now, give it another six months in bottle or cellar for five to seven more years. Serve with stewed rabbit (Richard Olney has a great recipe for this in his seminal cookbook LuLu's Provençal Table), grilled lamb chops, beef goulash, ox tail stew or grilled steak.

’06 Ridge Pagani Ranch $33.99
Almost black in the glass with a nose of massive ripe berry fruit. This Zin is all about powerful wild berry, black and red pepper and loamy earth red hewn to beautifully integrated acidity and chewy tannins. Enjoy this with leg of lamb or braised ox tail.

Best from 2010 through 2015.”– 89 WS

’04 Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs $27.97
Bread dough, caramel and green apple notes interplay along the elegant nose. The palate is a creamy expression of grapefruit and lime offset by a deft note of butterscotch before a touch of freshly baked brioche closes out on the lingering finish.

NV Schramsberg Mirabelle Brut Rose $22.99
“A rosé with serious intentions, this has a delicate pink hue and floral strawberry and spicy yeast roll aromas. The flavors show good focus, offering raspberry, Gala apple, ginger and fig flavors. Drink now through 2012.”– 93 WS

NV Schramsberg Mirabelle Brut $20.99
Buttery aroma of baked apple, lemon curd, nutmeg and a hint of cereal grain. The palate is a finely balanced expression of flowery lemon and lime flavors offset by the slightest suggestion of butterscotch. A citrus-infused almond finish lingers on and on.

’06 Ponzi Pinot Noir “Tavola” $23.99
This perfumed nose shows spiced cherries and maple syrup leading to a perfectly balanced, sweet mid-palate of dark cherry and red plums. The finish is long and seamless.
