Wine of the Week Profile, 11/28/05
2001 Celler Martí Fabra Grenache Blend “Masia Carreras”

2001 Celler Martí Fabra Grenache Blend “Masia Carreras”’01 Celler Martí Fabra Grenache Blend “Masia Carreras” (Net) $25.97
Located on northern tip of Spain’s eastern coast, the DO region of Empordà-Costa Brava experiences climatic extremes of hot summers and cold, harsh “Tramontana” winter winds. The grapes that grow in this weather can be exceptional. Formerly known for rosés (rosados), Empordà-Costa Brava is quickly building a reputation for its modern-styled reds and whites, which feature bold, bright, full-bodied fruit. One such red is the outstanding 2001 “Masia Carreras” from Celler Martí Fabra

The Masia Carreras property has been in the Martí Fabra Carreras family since the twelfth century and the first record of a vineyard purchase by the family is dated 1305. However, the Martí Fabra winery was not founded until 1900—after phylloxera had struck and large tracts of land had been sold off. Joan Carreras and his son began a comprehensive program of vineyard restoration and in 1961 the winery was rebuilt and the original farm buildings restored.

The 2001 “Masia Carreras” is made from 50% Garnacha, 35% Cariñena, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Tempranillo and 5% Syrah. The Garnacha and Cariñena vines are 50 to 80 years old and are very low yielding while the Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Syrah vines are younger. The vineyard soil is very acidic, composed of weathered shale that has good drainage and is organically poor. The wine was aged in French Allier oak for 18 months and was bottled with no fining or filtration.

The wine features an expansive, complex nose of black currants, crushed red and black cherries, cured ham, and herbs. The attack and mid-palate show explosive, ripe fruit with layers of blackberry and wild cherry flavors, enhanced by rosemary and mineral notes. Even though it has a huge structure, the components exist in perfect balance. This wine’s fabulous mouthfeel must be experienced to be believed. As is the case with the finest wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, this wine’s incredibly ripe, nuanced fruit helps achieve an amazing poise and grace on the palate in what would otherwise be a bruiser of a wine. Pair this wine with grilled red meats, roast pork and other “stick to your ribs” dishes with strong-flavored sauces.

—Chris

“From an outstanding vintage, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to full-bodied, powerful, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, acacia flower, and crushed rock characteristics. Layered and multidimensional, with superb purity and a fabulous noble stature, this terrific 2001 will drink well for a decade. Wow! …Could Costa Brava be the next Priorat?” —WA 94
