Wine of the Week Profile, 02/20/06
2002 Oliverhill Grenache “Bradley Block”

02 Oliverhill Grenache “Bradley Block”’02 Oliverhill Grenache “Bradley Block” $15.97
Oliverhill is a small boutique winery located in McLaren Vale, South Australia and is situated near the Onkaparinga Gorge National Park. The husband and wife team of Linda and Stuart Miller own the winery, which was founded in 1973. Oliverhill is well respected for their extremely limited artisan productions. Specifically, a single vineyard Shiraz, "Jimmy Section" from a small 5-acre plot planted 30 years ago; a Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on the lower section of the same vineyard; and finally the Bradley Block Grenache, sourced from 80 year-old bush vines.

The “Bradley Block” is a classic South Australian styled Grenache, with atypical juicy sweet black fruits, a massively shouldered linebacker-esque body and a profoundly deep palate presence that somehow manages to maintain the wine's strong balance and exceptionally decadent fruity intensity that conveys both its power and surprisingly velvety elegance.

Only 300 cases were made of the ’02 and we were lucky enough to get our hands on a limited quantity. I had a bottle of this blockbuster with ox-tail stew over the blizzard weekend and the dense plum and bramble tones intermingled beautifully with dramatically vibrant, richly steeped orange peel and saddle leather tones. Another classic paring with this Grenache is leg of lamb or even curried goat stew. This is a perfect and very affordable hearty red for rich winter fare.

—Donald

“The 2002 Grenache Bradey Block exhibits subtle notions of creamy oak in its sumptuous bouquet of black raspberries and sweet cherry jam. Powerful, full-bodied, and voluptuous, it is loaded from beginning to end. The 16% alcohol is buried beneath a cascade of fruit and glycerin in this decadently hedonistic South Australian offering. Enjoy it over the next 5-8 years.” —WA 91
