03 Château Maris Minervois “Old Vine Grenache” $23.99
The Minervois is due west of Saint-Chinian in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southeastern France. The appellation expands through the rugged arid hills above the Aude Valley and spreads out over the Herault and Aude departements.
Like most of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, Minervois is steeped in history. It is where the Albigensian Crusades started. In the early 13th century, the King of France joined forces with the Pope to oust and destroy what they called the Cathar heresy. The Cathars, a religious sect, believed that the essence of Christ's message was humility, so they preached an extreme form of asceticism. This put them in opposition to official Church doctrine. The crusades that eventually crushed the Cathars started with the Beziers massacre on July 22, 1209 and ended with the fall of Minerve in the summer of 1210.
Like the Cathars, outcasts, freethinkers and renegades have always been attracted to the region. Some of them were winemakers, writers, and painters, trying to make it in the “Wild West” of Southern France. This tradition continues to this day. For the past decade, organic and biodynamic producers have been thriving in the region. The long, hot and exceptionally dry summers have proved to be an ideal climate for producing natural wines.
Château Maris is a 40 hectare property with ancient Carignan and Grenache vines. The winemakers use sustainable production methods to ensure that their wines will be made the traditional way for many years to come.
The 2003 Château Maris "Old Vine Grenache" has an intense nose with loads of rich black pepper, saddle leather and ample hints of orange peel. The dense palate offers up black fruits, creamy cassis tones, buoyant acidity and is carried by silky, rich tannins. The finish lingers with a profound inflection of violets and wild herbs. I highly recommend serving it with lamb.

“A delicious and supple full-bodied red, with an alluring aroma of Asian spice, pepper and smoke, and an amazing purity in its rich dark plum, blackberry and kirsch flavors. A long, intense finish of spice and bacon. Tempting now.” WS 92
