The Loriñon Rioja Reserva is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 5% Garnacha, 5% Graciano, and 5% Mazuelo. The grapes were harvested in late September at maximum ripeness. As is well known, the 2001 vintage in Rioja was extraordinary and Bodegas Loriñon's efforts are certainly no exception. The fermentation and maceration took place in stainless steel tanks and lasted for 23 days. The wine underwent two rackings before it was put into American oak barrels where it rested for twenty-two months. The wine was then bottled and held at the vineyard for an additional eighteen months before it was released. Rich oak and coffee tones emerge on the nose and gracefully frame ripe plum jelly notes, a hint of coriander, chocolate and candied blackberries. The palate is a full-frontal fruity attack with more plums, ample cassis notes, raspberry and rich cedar flavors. The tannins are moderate and the acidity is mellow making this an easy drinking red ideal for sophisticated spring quaffing. Enjoy with grilled steak or roasted chicken. Donald |
