Wine of the Week Profile, 04/24/06
2004 Pirineos Blanco “Mesache”

04 Pirineos Blanco Mesache’04 Pirineos Blanco “Mesache” $7.99
The D.O. Somontano's vineyards are situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. Somontano literally means "under the mountain." This is a very lush part of Spain, whose vineyards produce an impressive variety of wines. The cool, mountainous climate of the region has proved a very good setting for producing high quailty international varieties as well as the traditional grapes of the region. In fact, Somontano produces some of Spain's best Cabernet Sauvignon, and value blends like Pirineos's “Mesache” white and red both offer excellent quality for the price.

Due to Somontano’s close proximity to France, French winemaking techniques and varieties have influenced this region and helped build its reputation for high quality wines. Today, winemakers make both international mono-varietals and blend interntional and indiginous grapes to achieve elegant, deeply structured wines. The principal red grapes are mainstays Tempranillo and Garnacha, little known Moristel (which some say may be Graciano) and the recently revived Parraleta along with international varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Pinot Noir. White grapes include the indigenous Alcañón, Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, as well as the ubiquitous Chardonnay and the Alsatian staple Gewürztraminer.

Bodega Pirnieos was founded in 1993 as a joint venture between the DO Somontano wine cooperative and the Aragon government. Its winemakers are very forward-thinking, using cutting-edge winemaking methods while benefiting from some of the oldest indigenous and international grape vines in the area.

The 2004 “Mesache” Blanco is a blend of 35% late-harvested Macabeo, 35% Gewürztraminer and 30% Chardonnay from mountain vineyards located 1500 ft. above sea level. This is a great place to grow wine. The vineyards benefit from North-East exposure and the vines thrive in the stony soil. The 2004 harvest began in late September and lasted until the middle of October.

Rich ginger and golden apple tones emerge on the nose and are backed by a hint of mountain flowers. The wine has remarkable viscosity and the palate is quickly coated by flavors of dried apple, beeswax and a hint of citrus infused minerality, which carries into the finish and adds unexpected lift. We suggest serving this superior value white with sheep’s milk cheeses, baked chicken and creamy pasta or seafood dishes.
