Since the 16th century, the Pélaquié family has passed on the secrets of creating terrific wines from generation to generation. Over the centuries they have established a profound relationship with the vine and its fruit. They have developed complex recipes for blending the various Rhône varieties and each generation has closely guarded their cultural heritage while enriching it with their own discoveries to create wines of great lineage. Luc Pélaquié has modernized the winery without forgetting any of his familys rich heritage. The vineyard in Laudun, where the Mourvèdre for this barrel-fermented cuvée was grown, is located near a Romanesque chapel and sheltered by a long row of Cyprus trees. The vines thrive in a sandy soil that is enriched with fossilized sediments and are situated on terraced slopes. This powerful Mourvèdre offers dense black fruit, fresh provençal herbs, smoked meats and creamy cassis on the nose. It is massively concentrated with ample fruit and depth. Yet it has an understated elegance with even acidity and a slight suggestion of oak. Its graceful power is due to the extremely low yields of the extraordinarily hot 2003 vintage and the skillful hands of a masterful winemaker. Drink now, ideally with grilled lamb, a rare porterhouse steak, or hold and enjoy over the next ten years. Donald |
