Wine of the Week Profile, 07/31/06
2004 Bisci Verdicchio di Matelica Vigneto Fogliano

04 Bisci’04 Bisci Verdicchio di Matelica Vigneto Fogliano 10.49
The Bisci winery is situated between the province of Macerata and Ancona, in a small township couched in the hilly central part of the Marche. The winery is located in the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC and is 300 to 340 meters above sea level. The vineyards are exclusively south facing and reap the benefits of this ideal exposure.

The cellar, located in the heart of the vineyards, was constructed in 1980. The winemakers have increased the density of the plantings with the aim of lowering their yields and are devoted solely to quality. They rigorously enforce intensive pruning and the strictest cluster selection during harvest; the wine is fermented in temperature controlled cement vats (under 20°C); maturation in tank lasts 8 months, and the wine is finally cellared in the bottle for 2 months before it is released. All of these steps ensure that the fruit purity and complexity of this Verdicchio truly shine.

This lively white is a bright golden hue that shimmers in the glass. The nose offers lovely notes of white flowers, peach skin and subtle hints of sun-baked straw and hazelnut suffuse from the glass. The palate is vibrant with a note of creamy passion fruit and uplifting acidity. This Verdicchio is rich with a full mouth feel and the fresh, lemony finish makes it ideal to serve with shellfish or hearty garden salads.
