The family of winemakers at Chateau d'Aydie are descendants of one of the most respected producers in Madiran. Frédéric Laplace, now regarded as the founding father of Madiran was the first to bottle and sell these wines under his own name, just after Madiran was given an A.O.C. in 1948. At that time their were only 50 hectares under vine, and today 1650 hectares produce wine throughout the region. A blend of 60% Tannat, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, this inky red offers sublime, ripe, black plum aromas on the nose. On the palate it is very well-balanced and fruity, featuring rich plum and black currant flavors accented by hints of black olive and underbrush. The ample, juicy middle palate is buoyed by supple acidity and leads into a harmonious finish of fine, full tannins, capped by chewy black plum tones. This robust, yet easy-going Madiran will pair beautifully with garlic sausage, braised lamb shank, cassoulet or just about any other other rich and hearty fare. Donald |
