2002 Di Majo Norante Aglianico “Contado”

The Aglianicos produced from Di Majo Norante, which is located in the Molise and overlooking the Adriatic Sea, are a quintessential example of what this oft overlooked and underappreciated region consistently produces.

Di Majo Norante is owned by Alessio Di Majo Norante, who is widely considered one of the best producers in the Molise. Their first vintage was bottled in 1968 and with the help of winemaker Riccardo Cotarella, Alessio has maintained his leading position in Molise and attained an almost unheard-of level of quality that is evident in every vintage.

This superb “Contado” is made from organically produced 30-year-old Aglianico vines. The result is a deeply concentrated and delicious wine that is a natural accompaniment to rustic fare.

A deep ruby red that is nearly opaque. The aromatics are dominated by notes of red currant, strawberry and warm blueberry pie (sans the dollop of whipped cream). The palate is a poised interplay of red berry fruits and super ripe plum flavors. Supple tannis carry the fruit toward a profoundly linear finish and provide a delectable backbone along the way. This full-on red is perfect for the cooler nights and shorter days that are now encroaching upon us. We highly recommend serving this Aglianico with braised lamb shoulder, wild game, and roasted meats.
