Wine of the Week Profile 12/18/06
2003 Château Charron
Côtes de Blaye “Les Gruppes”

03 Charron’03 Château Charron Bordeaux Premières Côtes de Blaye Cabernet Blend “Les Gruppes” $10.99
Château Charron is one of the most famous of the vineyards in the Côtes de Blaye, accumulating awards and accolades since the 18th century. Though less well known in the US, this region is appreciated throughout Europe for its great values and accessible reds and whites.

The Côtes de Blaye surrounds the fortified town of Blaye, which played a crucial role in defending the French from the English in the 16th century. Located on the northern end of Bordeaux’s right bank and directly across the Gironde estuary from Margaux, the Côtes de Blaye benefits from the same climate as its neighbor. The ’03 is a heady blend of Cabernet and Merlot, grown on vines that are at least twenty-five years old and are planted on slopes facing the Gironde. The soil, which sits just above the water table, consists of agrilo mixed with heavy veins of limestone, allowing moisture to penetrate the soil during the dry summer weather to sustain the fruit on the vine. This proved crucial during the unusually hot summer of ’03. The result is a deliciously fruit-forward red with impressive depth and complexity.

Ripe red and black cherry, crushed plum, currant and red pepper nuances on the nose with a dusting of mineral-infused limestone. The palate is dominated by red and black fruit, backed by smoked meat, saddle leather, and tar, offering an earthy edge. This is an affordable red for everyday drinking or to serve at your next dinner party. It will pair beautifully with hearty chicken or veal stews, leg of lamb or roast beef.
