Wine of the Week Profile 01/01/07
2003 Château Maris Minervois La Livinière Syrah “La Touge”

’03 Château Maris Minervois La Livinière Syrah “La Touge” $14.49
Château MarisRobert Eden, the talented winemaker at Château Maris, has been crafting gems on 40 hectares in the appellation Minervois La Livinière since 1997. From the beginning, his objective was to cultivate vineyards with the utmost respect for the environment so the wines will reflect all of the natural beauty, depth and flavor originating from the tiny eco systems in each vineyard.

“La Touge” is made from Syrah vines that are roughly ninety years old and located on a stony one hectare vineyard site. Because the vineyard is farmed organically, no synthetic fertilizers are used, but only compost from cow manure. The grapes are carefully picked at maximum ripeness, often after two or three delicate passes along the rows to capture the Syrah at its peak. Low harvest yields result in the production of only few cases of La Touge. Destemming takes place at the vineyard and then the grapes are fermented in a large wooden tank. After fermentation, the wine rests in oak barrels for 12 months before bottling without fining or filtration.

This beautiful Syrah features a heady perfume of crushed violets, warm lavender, ripe plum, blackberry, smoked meat and saddle leather, which builds in the glass. On the palate it is juicy, fruit-forward and medium- to full-bodied with lots of Syrah character and flavors which echo the notes on the nose. Good acidity adds a light touch to the finish, which concludes with an earthy, rustic touch and easy-going appeal. La Touge is a harmonious and flavor-packed red that is perfect with a vast array of hearty dishes. In addition, it is a dramatic testament to how extraordinary organic winemaking can be.
