Wine of the Week Profile 03/05/07
2005 Mourgues du Grès
Syrah Blend “Les Galets Rouges”

2005 Mourgues du Gres’05 Mourgues du Grès Costières de Nîmes Syrah Blend “Les Galets Rouges” $10.49
The Château Mourgues du Grès is located near the village of Beaucaire in the Costières de Nîmes appellation, which borders the Southern Rhône region to the southwest. It sits on the last spill of glacial galets or pudding stones—those large stones found in the vineyards of the Southern Rhône that gradually give off the sun’s heat throughout the night and allow the fruit to ripen evenly. It is here that the young winemaker, François Collard, has found an ideal area to highlight the luscious aspects of Syrah.

Les Galets Rouge is made predominately from Syrah, with Grenache, Mourvèdre and old vines Carignan making up the final blend. François harvests the grapes in late September. They undergo a gentle pressing, then the wine is macerated for 15 days and held in epoxy lined concrete tanks for up to 12 months in order to preserve its natural fruit before bottling.

Les Galets Rouge is a very harmonious and well-balanced blend with even illumine scent and dark fruit flavors. The nose gives off ample dried orange peel, spice, crème de cassis, bacon fat and lavender notes. The palate is packed with generous amounts of rich plum and blackberry flavors and a dusting of coco and saddle leather. Serve with grilled duck breast, rib-eye steak, leg of lamb or smoked sausages.
