Wine of the Week Profile 03/12/07
2002 Alois Lageder Alto Adige Merlot Blend “Portico dei Leoni”

02 Alois Lageder’02 Alois Lageder Alto Adige Merlot Blend “Portico dei Leoni” $12.49
Alto Adige is one of Italy’s smaller wine regions and one of the most beautiful in the world. Situated in the Italian Alps, Alto Adige is also one of the most geographically diverse. The majestic Alpine mountain ranges provide these highly elevated vineyards with protection from cold northerly winds throughout their long growing season. They also make for cool nights, which promote a slow, even ripening of the grapes with the result that the fruit develops profound aromatics and enticing flavors.

Respect for nature has always been one of the utmost priorities for the winemakers at Alois Lageder. From the planting and nurturing of the vines to the harvest, the work in the vineyards always takes the rhythms and cycles of nature into account. The quality of the fruit on the vines is greatly increased by natural agricultural methods. Alois Lageder has been practicing sustainable, eco-friendly viticulture for many years.

This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Lagrein has a deep, intense cherry-red color with a pronounced, fruity aroma of prune, cherry, spicy notes of leather, chocolate and nuances of crushed violets along with elegant oak spice. This blend is quite powerful, well-structured and possesses great fruit intensity on the palate. The tannins are present and very well integrated. Serve with grilled beef and lamb, game, and all sorts of savory cheeses.
