Wine of the Week Profile 05/14/07
2006 Domaine du Gour de Chaulé Gigondas Rosé

’06 Domaine du Gour de Chaulé Gigondas Rosé $19.99
2006 Domaine du Gour de Chaulé Gigondas RoséDomaine du Gour de Chaulé is situated in the very heart of Gigondas and was founded in 1900 by Eugene Bonfils, the grandfather of the current proprietor, Aline Bonfils. The vineyards, under Aline’s care, comprise 15 hectares, 10 of which are within the Gigondas AOC while the remaining 5 are located in Vacqueyras and Violes. Aline firmly believes that Grenache is the very heart of Gigondas, and that belief is clearly reflected in the vineyards where 85% of the vines are planted with Grenache, with approximately 10% dedicated to Syrah and Mourvèdre and the balance consisting of a smattering of Cinsault.

Aline makes this Gigondas rosé in very small quantities and we were very pleased to secure a limited amount for PJ’s customers. It is composed of 50% Cinsault, while Grenache and Mourvèdre make up the balance, which is drawn off the skins after a maximum 9 hours of contact in the vats before the wine undergoes fermentation. The wine undergoes cold stabilization without malolactic fermentation. It then rests in stainless steel before it is bottled in the spring.

This exceptional dry rosé is brilliantly colored with vibrant hues of pink and shimmering highlights. Sweet notes of strawberry jam, bright dried orange peel and cotton candy nuances gracefully unfurl in the glass. The palate is a rich, dynamic expression of bright red berry fruit flavors, orange zest, supple hints of wet stone and a touch of candied violet. Lively acidity gives this warm weather gem a graceful lift, merging into a refreshing and lingering finish. Enjoy with shrimp or lobster salads, charcuterie, roast pheasant, country sausage or even barbecued chicken.
