Wine of the Week Profile 05/21/07
2006 Artazu Garnacha Rosé “Artazuri”

2006 Artazu Garnacha Rosé “Artazuri”’06 Artazu Garnacha Rosé “Artazuri” $9.49
The tiny village of Artazu is located in the Navarra DO, which lies in the northern reaches of the Iberian Peninsula, between the Pyrenees to the north and La Rioja to the south. Originally the area was known as the kingdom of Pamplona. Navarra is not far from Basque, Catalan and Castillian strongholds, and it is equally influenced by all three.

Artazu was created by Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle the winemaker behind Rioja’s world-renowned Artadi estate. Juan Carlos’ goal was to create wines with great varietal purity outside of Rioja and the small village of Artazu was chosen for its extraordinary old vine Garnacha.

Navarra is profoundly affected by Atlantic and Mediterranean maritime influences. In addition, the region benefits from the cold winds of the Pyrenees. The soil consists of limestone with alternating layers of red clay. Rainfall in the region is quite moderate.

This perennial star rosé from Artazu is made exclusively from old vine Garnacha in the saignée method. It boasts loads of bright, ripe strawberry and mixed berry scents with orange peel and limestone accents that reappear on the palate along with wonderful mineral tones. The flavors are wonderfully integrated with vibrant acidity that keeps the wine buoyant and refreshing on the palate. This flavorful, dry rosé is truly impressive and thirst quenching. Serve with grilled fish, spicy steamed shrimp, steamed crabs, roast chicken or char-grilled burgers.
