Wine of the Week Profile 08/20/07
2005 Les Vignerons d’Estezargues
“Les Grandes Vignes” Côtes du Rhône

’05 Les Vignerons d’Estezargues “Les Grandes Vignes” Côtes du Rhône $9.49
2005 Les Vignerons d'Estezargues Les Grandes Vignes Cotes du Rhone Estézargues is a tiny village in the southern Rhône with fewer than 400 inhabitants. It is famous for its terroir-driven and varietally pure wines. This state-of-the-art cooperative produces dozens of award winning wines from 320 hectares of vines, and constitutes the principal economic activity of the village. Since 1965, the village wine growers have combined their resources and expertise to create stellar organic and/or sustainable wines.

Estézargues produces wines under four domain names, which are well known in the US: Domaine Andézon, Domaine de Périllère, Domaine Montagnette and Domaine de Pierredon. In addition, we at PJ’s are quite fond of “Les Grandes Vignes,” which is produced under the Les Vignerons d’Estezargues name. “Les Grandes Vignes” is made exclusively of old vine Cinsault, grown on clay-based and stone-strewn argillaceous soil. Over the last two vintages, this wine has become a Rhône value mainstay at the store and a staff favorite—especially with barbecued chicken.

This affordable old vine Rhône red packs elegant notes of smoky red fruits, violet, herbs and a hint of dark chocolate on its lovely nose. The palate is rich with ripe cherry and berry flavors, mineral notes, supple acidity and soft tannins. This organic gem pairs beautifully with barbecued chicken, ham, grilled pork, braised lamb shoulder or hearty beef stews.
