Wine of the Week Profile 9/24/07
’06 Domaine de la Janasse
Côtes du Rhône Red

’06 Domaine de la Janasse Côtes du Rhône Red $12.97
2006 Domaine de la Janasse Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge The Janasse domain was created in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. He had returned from military service in 1967 and taken over his father’s vineyards (who was selling off his grapes to the local cooperative) and his father-in-law’s vineyards (who was bottling his own wine). In 1973 Aimé built his own winery and those two sets of vineyards became the foundation of Domaine de la Janasse. Today the winery sources its fruit from 50 ha (122 acres) of vineyards scattered throughout the AOC Châteauneuf du Pâpe, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village and also from the Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange vineyards. Aimé and his son, Christophe Sabon, a “great defender of Grenache,” helm this organic, family run winery. They take great care of their vines from bud-break to harvest, and craft some of the finest, most representational wines of the southern Rhône.

Despite another year with little or no rainfall throughout the southern Rhône, the vines in ’06 received enough nighttime moisture to flourish despite the hot, arid days. Excellent ripening conditions lead to ideal maturity by the very end of a long hot summer. In fact the ’06 harvest was the 8th year in a row for excellent growing conditions, and subsequently, excellent wine in the southern Rhône!

This enticing and affordable blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Carignan, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault has a lovely nose that is dominated by juicy black plum, sweet cherry, and warm cassis notes. The palate opens with a broad and scrumptious range of ripe black fruit flavors that are backed by round notes of violet, lavender and creamy hints of dusty, sun-baked stones. This pretty and supple Côtes du Rhône offers elegant weight, ripe fruit and a moderate notes of saddle leather hewn to silky tannins. Serve with braised rabbit, roast pork, lamb shoulder or filet mignon.
