Breaking away from tradition and against all odds, Fossi planted a spectrum of international varietals from whites Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Blanc to reds Gamay, Malbec, Merlot and Syrah. Working outside of local regulations, but with great respect and understanding of his vineyards, has created distinctive and expressive wines, which have received praise on both sides of the Atlantic. Due to their hand-crafted and limited production, Enrico Fossi’s wines typically to retail for around $70 to $80 a bottle. This limited bottling has a pure and sweet bouquet of black cherry, blackberry syrup, saddle leather, red clay and smoked meat intertwined with charcoal ash, warm embers and soy sauce. This is a heady and powerful expression of Syrah, yet it shows a restrained elegance with loads of ripe black fruit on the palate, beautifully woven to silky tannins and supple acidity. The mid-palate is deep and earthy with rich peppery tones that ride into the meaty finish. Showing polish, finesse and enhanced roundness from extra time in the bottle, this big red is distinctive and complex. Enjoy with hearty pasta dishes, roast beef, grilled lamb rubbed with rosemary and garlic or seared hanger steak.
