Wine of the Week Profile 02/11/08
2006 Viña Cobos “El Felino” Mendoza Malbec
2006 Vina Cobos El Felino Mendoza Malbec’06 Viña Cobos “El Felino” Mendoza Malbec $15.99
After having survived a shipwreck, Spanish explorers found themselves on the banks of the La Plata River in the company of indigenous people, who offered them fine silver goods made by their tribe. The Spanish called the land “argentum,” which means silver. This provided the inspiration for name of the country that would eventually be known as Argentina. In 1541, Spanish settlers brought their vines and wine-making techniques to this “new land” making it the oldest wine growing country in the Americans. Today, Argentina is arguably the most important wine producing country in South America.

Mendoza is regarded as the best place to grow wine in Argentina. 80% of the total amount of wines produced in the country comes from Mendoza and the region also contains the greatest number of wineries. The high altitude, nutrient-poor soil along with a dramatic difference in temperature between day and night (bright hot days and cold nights) and very little rain throughout the year are the distinguishing characteristics of Mendoza. The varietals best adapted to the region are Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The former is regarded as the star, as it expresses itself more expressively and elegantly in Mendoza than anywhere else in the world.

Paul Hobbs, one of the most renowned and respected oenologists in California, serves as winemaker at Viña Cobos. His exceptional Sonoma wines and his passion and devotion to winemaking lead him to work with Mr. Robert Mondavi at Opus One and he was elected as the “Most Important Winemaker in California” in 2004 by the Wine Quartely Review. He recognized the tremendous potential of the Mendoza region and began making wine there less than a decade ago.

The El Felino Viña Cobos Malbec, simply put, is a world-class wine that is in a class by itself. It is produced only in exceptional vintages and is made from 80 year old vines. It exhibits levels of concentration and power rarely achieved in Argentina. Varietal correctness, concentration and a great emphasis on the wine’s terroir are the focus of this Argentine standout. The nose is packed with aromas of ripe black cherry and crushed juicy plum, fig and hints of guava paste, cigar ash and warm vanilla bean. Spicy notes of juicy red cherry dominate the palate and are backed by delicate hints of honey blossom, fresh fig, blackberry syrup, warm saddle leather and integrated notes of French oak. This explosive and dramatic Malbec is an elegant and affordable red that is perfect with roast pork or grilled steak.
