Wine of the Week Profile 03/17/08
2004 Allegrini
“Palazzo della Torre” Veronese IGT

’04 Allegrini “Palazzo della Torre” Veronese IGT $14.97
2004 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre ValpolicellaThe Allegrini estate is located in Fumane di Valpolicella, which is just north of Verona. Valpolicella, otherwise know as the, “valley of many cellars” is an area crossed from the north and south by a series of low hills, which form three parallel valleys. These valleys are divided by narrow river beds which remain dry throughout the year and then swell during spring thaws and heavy autumn rains. The unique geography and consistent weather patterns in Valpolicella combine to create an ideal growing environment for outstanding wine.

The Allegrini family has been producing wine in Valpolicella for many generations and they have played a vital role in this region for centuries. The winery was one of the first to revolutionize accepted winemaking practices, and to advocate greater quality and varietal purity. Under the guidance of Giovanni Allegrini, the winery combined the science of enology with strict grape selection and made some of the region’s best wines. Giovanni Allegrini’s winemaking philosophy is largely based on the concept that a single vineyard should be dedicated to the production of local varieties and they should be destined to become a single wine. This wine making style has focused on emphasizing the local grapes, thereby crafting enticing wines that always show elegance, intensity, concentration and complexity.

This blend of 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese is a rich and supple, full-bodied cru made in an innovative ripasso style. After the harvest, the grapes from the vineyard follow two different paths: 70% of the grapes picked are vinified immediately, the remaining 30% are left to dry until the end of December. They are then vinified and re-fermented with the wine from the fresh grapes.

Dense and deep ruby red in color in the glass, this gem is loaded with luscious aromas of dried currant, blackberry syrup and black licorice. Full-bodied and rich, the palate offers loads of fresh plum, ripe cherry and a dusting of chocolate and raisin. The fruit on the finish lingers on like the waning spring sun at the end of a bright weekend afternoon. Enjoy this fruit-laden and balanced value favorite with crispy roast chicken, grilled red meats or barbecued ribs.
