Wine of the Week Profile 04/28/08
2007 Domaine de Laurens Marcillac Fer Servadou Rosé

2007 Domaine de Laurens Marcillac Fer Servadou Rose’07 Domaine de Laurens Marcillac Fer Servadou Rosé $11.99
Domaine de Laurens wines come from a vineyard site of 21 rugged hectares. Located near the tiny village of Clairvaux, the Laurens family has been crafting wine here for several generations. They hand-harvest their vines and rarely use chemicals in their wines. The Marcillac red and rosé that they craft are highly regarded in France and win many awards and competitions including the famous Concours Agricole.

The tiny Marcillac region received its AOC status in 1970. The vineyard sites are situated on steep slopes between the Rodez and Lot River. The soil contains deep red clay that is rich in iron. The Domaine de Laurens vineyards consist entirely of Fer Servadou grape, which is also know as Mansois. Their wines have a highly individual flavor of crushed redcurrants and raspberries. These vineyards were originally started by the monks from the nearby Abbey of Conques and the wine is locally know to be very good for the heart.

The nose on this rose shows great blackberry and spicy black currant scents plus a hint of iron and loamy soil. On the highly seductive and mouth-filling palate you’ll find ample flavors of blackberry, cranberry and tart orange that are seamlessly integrated with savory minerals—iron ore in particular—and a touch of warm earth notes that are offset by modest tannins. This is a food friendly quaffer that will pair beautifully with charcuterie, grilled rosemary chicken, roast pork, or even richly charred burgers.
