Wine of the Week Profile 11/17/08

2006 Razor’s Edge
McLaren Vale Shiraz/Grenache

’06 Razor’s Edge Shiraz/Grenache $11.99
2006 Razor's Edge Shiraz/Grenache A stunning value for the money and an ideal turkey day match-up, this succulent blend from the winemaking team at the Razor’s Edge with put a lot of flavor on your Thanksgiving table without putting a dent in your wallet.

The Razor's Edge is the latest offering from the ongoing collaboration between Jake Sobotka of Joshua Tree Imports and noted Australian winemaking star Rolf Binder.

Razor's Edge was launched in 2004 with fruit sourced from choice vineyard sites located around the McLaren Vale in Western Australia. Both Jake and Rolf are very well connected in the McLaren Vale and the fruit that the source for their Shiraz Grenache blend is from some of the best vineyard sites in the region. The McLaren Vale is just south of Adelaide and it is blessed by a warm and dry Mediterranean climate, making it an ideal place for growing Shiraz and Grenache based wines. McLaren Vale has poor soils and long summers with hot dry-spells, these factors force the vines to work very hard and that produces wines with natural vigor, intensely flavored fruit and bright acidity.

The Razor’s Edge consists of 70% Shiraz which gives the wine its plush opulent fruit flavors and 30% Grenache which provides the wine with its dynamic spice and supple structure.

The wine is a deep, deep garnet in the glass with a shimmering ruby edge. The nose is dominated by aromas of freshly picked Empress Plums and baskets of ripe raspberries followed by smoky notes of warm clay and a cinnamon-driven peppery spice. Rich red fruits—strawberries, cherry juice, raspberries and juicy plums—dominate the palate and are framed by pepper spice and a note of smoky minerality. The wine ends with a note of bright cherry that gets a nice lift from the wines buoyant acidity. This is an ideal wine to serve with Thanksgiving dinner as the ample fruit and spice on the wine will mesh beautifully with traditional fare and it is an idea wine to serve the day after with turkey sandwiches.

—Donald

“Polished, round and expressive. A gorgeous mouthful of ripe blackberry, plum, cherry and exotic spices, with hints of leather and brown sugar nibbling at the edge. The finish rolls on and on against superfine tannins.” —WS 91
