Wine of the Week Profile 03/30/09

2007 Marcillet Bourgogne Aligoté

Marcillet’07 Marcillet Burgundy, Bourgogne Aligoté $11.99

Nadine and Remi Marcillet are old-school vignerons who live off the grid in the Côte-d'Or, with no email and no internet, in the very heart of the beautiful Burgundian wilderness. They live in a 300-year-old stone farmhouse and produce traditional wines of outstanding quality, and do absolute wonders with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and the oft-overlooked Aligoté. Nadine and Remi work almost exclusively with private clients, meaning that very little of their wines are found outside of the tiny village of Fussey which is a few kilometers north of Nuit St. George. Very little of their wine is imported to the US.

The Marcillet's employ sustainable winemaking techniques that encompass the surrounding eco-system so all the natural elements within the vineyard work in harmony with nature. The grapes are harvested by hand at their maximum ripeness, gently pressed in a 100 year old winepress and aged in old, neutral oak where the wine undergoes 6 to 9 months of direct contact with fine lees.

Light straw colored in the glass with an almost transparent edge around the rim of the glass. Inviting scents of white stone fruits, pulverized mineral notes and a hint of wet stones grace the richly expressive nose. The palate is a delectable expression of white fruits, ripe melon flesh and a hint of citrus zest. This white has great natural acidity that really sets off the green apple and creamy white peach quality on the finish. This gem is light enough to enjoy by itself and packs more than enough elegance to serve with grilled river fish, seared scallops and even roast chicken.
