’08 Domaine Sainte Lucie “MIP” Provence Rosé $10.99
Domaine Sainte Lucie is a wonderful vineyard with holdings on the stony slopes of the iconic Mont Saint Victoire. The mountain is celebrated for its many appearances in the paintings of Paul Cèzanne who could see it from his house. The mountain is also featured prominently in the panoramic backdrop of Enguerrand Quarton's extraordinary, Coronation of the Virgin. Pablo Picasso purchased the Château de Vauvenargues which is situated at the foot of the mountain and installed one of his many studios there. In addition, Wassily Kandinsky was inspired by the majestic Mont Saint Victoire and rendered many vibrant interpretations of it onto canvas.
Domaine Sainte Lucie was created in 1978 by Michel Fabre. His children have recently completed their winemaking studies and they have given the domaine a significantly youthful injection of quality into the production of its cuvees. The domaine holds forty hectares of vines with the average age of thirty-five years per vine. The stony soils under vine are arid and harsh, the vines produce very little fruit and that is simply perfect for the creation of hearty, terroir-driven reds and delicious rosés. Domaine Sainte Lucie produces wines made from a mix of Grenache and Syrah, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault-the traditional blend of varieties from this picturesque region. The rosés they produce get an addition percentage of Rolle (also known as Vermentino in Italy) added to them which brightens the floral expression of this succulent wine.
A bright and pretty pale rosé, like pink neon in sunlight, with a silver rim around the edge of the glass. The nose carries loads of fresh citrus fruit overtones and a dusting of garrigue infused terroir. The palate is coated with buoyant raspberry and red currant fruit on the first sip while orange peel and pip emerge on the middle palate. The wine is supple with great weight and carries a deliciously thirst-quenchingly dry finish. I highly recommend serving "MiP" (Made in Provence) with grilled shrimp or scallops, it also works really well with barbequed chicken.
