’08 Josef Leitz “Dragonstone” Riesling $13.99
Located in the town of Rudesheim, the Josef Leitz winery is one of the finest in the Rheingau. Johannes Leitz is currently at the helm of this dynamic winery and he happens to be a masterful producer of complex naturally made wines. Johannes understands that the beauty of Rieslings is not simply an expression of pure ripe fruit, but also the quartz and slate soil, in which the vines thrive.
Dragonstone is the winery's entry level QbA bottling--Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiet, quality wine from a specified region. To qualify for (QbA) status, the wine is tested to ensure that it shows the typical character of the variety and region. In terms of sweetness QbA's fall between Kabinett and Spätlese and this one is no exception. Approximately 9000 cases of Leitz Drangonstone are produced annually and nearly all of it is exported. The name "Dragonstone" is an English translation of "Drachenstein" and the wine is named for the mysterious footprint of a dinosaur-like creature that was discovered in the vineyards.
The '08 Dragonstone is very young, yet it is showing beautifully and that is great news for those of us who love German wines and are eagerly awaiting the vintage. Now, PJ's still has plenty of outstanding '07 at great prices and by singing the Dragonstone's praises I am by no means suggesting that you neglect our affordable '07's. The nose is filled with exotic flowers and spice. Racy acidity balances the honeyed fruit of apricots and peaches on the palate, leading to a pure and lingering finish. This could very well be a Spätlese - with its marked fruit and vibrant sweetness - masquerading as a QbA, making it an outstanding value. This is the perfect Riesling to enjoy this summer with your favorite spicy Asian dishes.
