The 2010 Malbec contains 5% Bonarda in its blend. It spent 9 months in 50% new French and American oak. Notes of balsam wood, smoke, black cherry, and spice box lead to a similarly styled wine that comes off as just a bit too lean. Again, the flavors are pleasant, but it should be drunk over the next several years while it retains its fruit.
The Crios label is synonymous with Argentina’s leading female wine personality, Susana Balbo. However, she has handed over winemaking duties to her son, Jose Lovaglio. Perhaps it is my imagination, but the current releases (with the exception of the winery’s specialty, Torrontes) lack the sizzle of recent vintages. Even so, they are all excellent values. WA
