91 WA - Domaine la Garrigue "Cuvee Romaine" Cotes du Rhone 2010 (750ML)
The glass in front of us as we type this has that sagebrush, lavender thing happening. It is also full of deep, black fruits; typical of the Grenache/Syrah blends from this part of the Southern Rhone. It fills the mouth with wild berries and kirsch, and lingers with the sense of having just finished off some plump blackberries full of late summer sun. Plus there's a twist of licorice thrown in. This is a classic, impressive wine-showing plenty of the concentration Vacqueyras is known for-and another superb offering from the Bernard family. The family first released their "Cuvee Romaine" (a name inspired by the ancient Roman artifacts that were excavated by archeologists on the property) in 1982. Theirs is a small estate of 70 hectares, consisting mostly old vines between 40-60 years in age. Their red wines are unfined, and unfiltered allowing for even more of that garrigue terroir to cut through and keep the expression pure and honest.
