Everyone called Don Maximiano Errazuriz loco for attempting to pioneer the hard-scrabble land at the base of Chile's Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the western hemisphere, but he know this land was begging for grapes. And he was right. Today, Errazuriz remains at once visionary and connected to land. There's a lot of bang for the buck with this luxurious hand-picked Chardonnay; there's a little earthiness on the nose in all likelihood from fermenting via the grapes' own wild yeasts, and then it follows with aromas and flavors of juicy Red Delicious apples, a little tropical fruit, and streamlined minerality that keeps its lusciousness in focus. It's a great accompaniment to nice, Kosher-salt rubbed chicken and roasted root vegetables. -- PJ
