Perhaps the most famous Alsatian producer outside of France, and with good reason. Trimbach's stunning, austere version of this faithful German grape is the kind of Riesling that can launch a thousand ships-or at least, inaugurate new fans of Riesling, and even win over those who doubters before. Why? Well, as you've probably heard over and over, it may be the most misunderstood grape on the planet, with the constant rhetoric being it's too sweet or too hard to understand the levels of sweetness. Trimbach's 2008 hits the (un)sweet spot-it's got great citrus and apple-orchard fruit, but with a briny, dry, elegant mouthfeel and great, dry finish that's a tribute to this grape's great versatility. -- PJ
