This domaine-the largest in Chassagne-has had its ups and downs since the Cournut family bought the place in 1940, but things really began to look up in 1995 with second-generation Cournut, Jean-Pierre, stepped in and helped this properly truly live up to its noble potential. The white-heavy production focuses 60% of its hand-harvested efforts on Chardonnay, but the rest makes for some pretty exciting Pinot, like this 2009 "La Boudriotte," at once complex, nuanced, and powerful in its bright, beautiful cherry fruit and savory, Old World style. -- PJ
