There is more complexity here on both the nose and the palate with a perfumed mélange of fresh and pure red currant, plum and floral scents. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension and fine delineation to the seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that are notably permeated by an almost pungent minerality on the long, balanced and delicious finish. These vines are found mid-slope on a slight incline facing east and their soil is shared between clay and limestone in medium deep ground, making this an exceptional terroir. The vines were planted in several phases, with an average age of 40 years.

Ile des Vergelesses is arguably the most important Premier Cru climat within the Pernand-Vergelesses. Ile des Vergelesses Premier Cru wines are medium bodied with excellent structure: they are among the appellation's best. Soils in Ile des Vergelesses are not dissimilar to those on the Corton Grand Cru hill a little way to the northwest. Iron-rich limestone dominates, although this is made up of clay marl at the top of the slope, and more pebbly at the bottom. It has been suggested that the Ile des Vergelesses vineyard is the most likely contender in the commune for elevation to Grand Cru status. As Pernand-Vergelesses is one of the Cote de Beaune's lesser-known appellations, Ile des Vergelesses Premier Cru wines can offer some value for money.

This historic estate was established in 1834. Claude de Nicolay took over from her mother as winemaker in 1988 and crafts traditionally styled wines from one of the Cote d'Or's great terroirs, the hill of Corton and its surrounding villages. The vineyard management has been fully biodynamic since 2005 and organic since 1998. Claude's brother, Francois de Nicolay joined the domaine in 2001.
