Orto Vins Les Argiles Negre Montsant 2017 (750ml)

Review is on the 2016 vintage.

All three colors of wine are produced from vines that grow in the village of El Masroig on soils rich in clay, for which an entry-level range of wines is named (les argiles means "the clays" in Catalan). The 2016 Les Argiles Negre is a blend of 90% Garnacha with 10% Cariñena from a very dry year. The grapes come from four different vineyards and were fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, then matured in well-seasoned, neutral barriques for three months. It's a bright ruby color and has a fresh and fruit-driven, clean nose, very pleasant and clean, with no oak whatsoever. The palate is light to medium-bodied, with unnoticeable tannins and a soft texture coupled with good freshness. A red of pleasure that's so easy to drink. 8,000 bottles were filled in May 2017.

Orto Vins is one of the quality leaders in the Montsant appellation and is led by Joan Asens. For a long while, she was the winemaker at Álvaro Palacios in the neighboring Priorat. They live and work in the village of El Masroig, where their vineyards are located, 26 hectares in total, from which they produce a wide range of characterful wines, many small lots from single vineyards, totaling 45,000 bottles per vintage. The limited range of singular wines mentions on the label the grape variety used and the name of the person that works the vineyard. I tasted a wide and beautiful range of wines, all showing a marked personality.
