Bruno Verdi Riesling Vigna Costa Oltrepo Pavese 2015 (750ml)

Bruno Verdi Riesling Vigna Costa Oltrepo Pavese 2015 (750ml)

This more substantial white is hand-harvested from vineyards at 600 feet or so above sea level in the commune of Castana. Approximately 20 to 25% of the Riesling Renano is fermented in large oak botte; then, the assembled wine is aged for an additional six months in stainless steel. The resulting wine is delicately aromatic with excellent length and freshness.

The wine we were floored by is a dry Riesling from a small producer named Bruno Verdi. While tasting it, the wines of the Nahe region of Germany came to mind. This wine is very linear with great acidity/crispness, and the focus of a wine twice its price. This Riesling is fresh, with more mineral attributes than sweet floral ones, and is showing an unbelievable amount of complexity for this price range. It is displaying a classic petrol note on the bouquet, that is reminiscent of a Riesling with a bit more bottle age, and will definitely have Riesling lovers swooning.

The Verdi family can trace its viticultural origins back seven generations to the 18th century, when Antonio Verdi came from Parma to settle in the Oltrepò Pavese. The original farm was founded on wheat and corn production; mulberries for silkworms were grown for the leaves, and of course, grapevines were planted. Luigi, of the third generation of Verdis, was the first to transform the family’s grapes into wine. However, it was Bruno who was the first to bottle his wine at the estate after World War II. He put his own name on the label, and Bruno Verdi wines were born. His son, Paolo, now carries on the tradition, skillfully bringing the estate into the modern era.
