Domaine Meix Foulot Mercurey 1er Cru Rouge 2013 (750ml)

Domaine Meix Foulot Mercurey 1er Cru Rouge 2013 (750ml)

Subtle aromas of smoky berry fruit, grilled meats and spices. Elegant medium-body, without being timid, this pinot noir displays scintillating freshness and classic terroir of Mercurey. Lovely black berry and dark raspberry notes with a mix of “sauvage” that hint of soil, which adds a compellingly rustic component. The soft, supple tannins are well integrated. This is drinking profoundly!

One of the stars of our French wine tasting last weekend was a beautiful red Burgundy from Domaine du Meix Foulot. The Domaine du Meix Foulot has been in the hands of the de Launay family for multiple generations. Paul de Launay took the reins during the 1960s and began to bottle an increasingly important percentage of the wine produced at the domaine. In the mid-1990s, his daughter Agnes, joined the domaine and is now solely running the show.

Agnes de Launay presides over 20-hectares in Mercurey, which boasts an enviable palate of premiers crus that even includes a monopole. The wine we showcased in our tasting is a blend from those premier cru vineyards from the 2013 vintage. Fans of traditionally styled french Pinot Noir should be drooling over premier cru burgundy, of this caliber, at such an affordable price as this.

There is a beautiful purity and charm to her wines, especially this bottling. It is right in it’s drinking window, although it will cellar easily for the next five years. We warmly recommend this wine, especially as we transition from summer to fall, for there is a sense of fall in the wine itself.
