Chateau Leydet Valentin Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2015 (750ml)

Chateau Leydet Valentin Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2015 (750ml)

PJ Wine's 2019 Wine of the Year!!!!

Frederic Leydet's vines for this wine are just near the border of Cheval Blanc, sharing a similar soil distinguished by its iron content. The iron in the soil is particularly good for growing Cabernet Franc, and it's the reason the Leydet works with a rather high percentage of it in comparison to others in the appellation. The final blend is 63% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Franc. Leydet always makes the wines without any racking, fining, or filtration, giving a super classic Bordeaux. The winery is certified organic. 2015 has red fruit, herbal notes of lavender, rosemary, and thyme. Even though this has the structure to age, the wine is very open and drinking well in its youth.

Our tasting panel for PJ Wine’s 2019 Wine of the Year Taste-Off crowned Chateau Leydet Valentin the winner after receiving the highest average score. Around thirty of our favorite wines from throughout the year were tasted blind and Chateau Leydet Valentin bested them all. We have enjoyed this wine in the past but this vintage (2015) is smokin’ good!

The consensus was that this wine is the perfect bridge between the “old world” and the “new world” style of winemaking. The bouquet is very inticing and not shy what so ever, this is certainly contributed to the high percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend. The dark core of fruit is sumptuous and seductive while concealing a terroir characteristic that supplies a bit of “old world” flair. The tannins are present, providing structure, however, they are soft and enjoyable which is fairly common for the vintage. After declaring Chateau Leydet Valentin the winner our tasting panel sat and enjoyed the rest of the bottle, reward well deserved, and we all remarked on how pleasurable this wine is now. Although you may want to purchase a case and see how this Saint Emilion Grand Cru evolves over the next decade, beautifully I am sure, it will be hard to resist drinking this holiday season.

Frederic Leydet runs his family estate, Chateau Leydet Valentin, in a top growing area of Saint-Emilion (very near to Cheval Blanc, Figeac, and Angelus). The soil is composed of sand, fine gravel, and iron and as a result, they have a high percentage (nearly 25%) of Cabernet Franc planted to best express this terroir - much like Cheval Blanc.

The winery was passed down through the generations, but it was Frederic’s father, Bernard Leydet who started bottling from only a few hectares of vines in 1962. Over the years, he gradually purchased more vineyards and at the time of his death in 2006, the estate had grown to 9 hectares in Saint-Emilion. Leydet was born and raised at the property and after studying vine growing and oenology, he came to work at the estate in 1996. Since he began he has introduced new practices, such as pruning and green harvesting. In 2012, he began the conversion to certified organic viticulture, receiving the certification for the 2015 vintage.

In the winery, fermentation happens naturally in the tank. The wines are aged on the lees in oak barrels with no racking, a strict minimum of sulfur and no fining or filtration. They believe a hands-off approach in the cellar produces wines of prolific depth and character. Chateau Leydet Valentin Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2015 has a lovely amount of fruit and a touch of earthiness, backed by structure and tannins, that are present but not overpowering.
