Roagna Langhe Rosso 2014 (750ml)

Roagna Langhe Rosso 2014 (750ml)

There is some red fruit character to go along with its core of black cherry fruit, anise, autumnal soil tones, tar and woodsmoke. The tannins are youthful but pleasant and do not distract from what an incredible wine this is. The palate is balanced and displays the potential to easily evolve in the cellar for fifteen years. Like many traditional Barolo or Barbaresco producers, the wines of Roagna improve immeasurably if decanted for a significant period of time prior to drinking, even when the wines have spent a number of years in the cellar.

The grapes for this wine come from Roagna's younger vines (25 years old and younger ) in Pira in Castiglione Falletto (Barolo) and in Paje in Barbaresco. Most vines are 20-25 years old.
Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 60 days. The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release. While this wine is made from Luca's "younger vines," most producers would use this fruit for their Barbaresco or Barolo. The wine could easily be mistaken for either in a blind tasting.
