Historic wine of Portugal

The 2009 Reserva Velho Chitas is all Ramisco from ungrafted vines. It was aged for approximately 48 months in large, used barrels of "ex-colony, exotic woods," as the winery put it—Mahogany, Macacauba and Rosewood—then held back in bottle for late release. This style is a bit of an acquired taste, but this is very well done in its style. From a big vintage in most of Portugal, this easily maintains its balance. As with the 2008, there is adequate concentration to soak up the acidity, but you will notice the acidity. There is a somewhat tart edge. Then, some mild tannins kick in. There's a reasonably long finish with lifted fruit on the finish. It is nuanced with raspberries. It feels a little smoother in texture, though, than the 2008, the last one seen (these are, again, late released).
