Chateuneuf du Pape fans will love this 50/50 Syrah/Grenache blend from the western side of the Rhone Valley. This red comes from a cooler climate and it shows in the gratefulness at which it carries itself. Open, smooth, and irresistible! The bouquet waffs out of the glass with enticing garrigue notes while the palate displays a traditional gamey aspect. The wine feels iron rich and substantial in the mouth but finishes elegantly with refined tannins. Clearly this wine is special and coming from renown wine importing Kermit Lynch Wine Merchants, we are not surprised. Bravo!

The Rhone Valley of France, we talk a lot about the wines from the Southern Rhone (Cotes du Rhone, Châteauneuf du Pape) and of the Northern Rhone (Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage) but what about Western Rhone?

Right where north and south meet head west from the Rhone River and you will find Côtes du Vivarais. This hilly terrain is the mirror image of the Cotes du Rhone on the eastern side of the river but rarely talked about. It is cooler and a bit rainier here resulting in wines that are less brutish and more subtle. Today’s wine is from Domaine Gallety, arguably the best producer of the appellation.

Everything about Domaine Gallety’s approach is about subtlety. They hand harvest their organically grown Syrah and Grenache. Bring the grapes to their gravity fed winery to avoid pumping. Wines are aged in old Burgundy barrels believed to be more neutral in the aging process. Wines are then bottled unfined and unfiltered in order to not dilute them of any character.

To be perfectly frank, Domaine Gallety's red is nothing short of a masterpiece! This is what I always want Chateauneuf du Pape to be but it never quite gets there. You will notice the bouquet immediately as it is not shy at all, with notes of garrigue and game. The wine is graceful on the palate with perfect balance from start to finish and lingers on and on. When I was told that older vintages of this were being poured at two different Michelin starred restaurants by the glass, I thought sure… whatever. After tasting it I thought, how could they not?!
